My job responsibilities was to oversee ICF and wavier homes. 15 of them. I had to be a part of state reviews, internal reviews. I to ensure we were in compliance and maintained relationships with the county boards and guardians. I held meetings in different homes to ensure training was done and sometimes I had to be in the homes hands on training to ensure my staff understood what was required. A lot of families love me and enjoyed the changes they saw in my department. I had to hold monthly family meetings to hear concerns and make sure they were heard. I was responsible for multiple duties such as payroll, scheduling, trainings, money management, pay bills, check documentation, filling in if there’s no one to cover the shift. Most importantly I engage with all my clients and help them in whatever aspect of their lives I can and ensure they were treated well and got to enjoy their own independence.

Interviewing with Joe: My Focus

  • Joe already knows my history. He knows:
  • My tenure with Toward Independence.
  • My performance as a Director.
  • My audit and compliance history.
  • My turnover rates.
  • My leadership style.
  • My commitment to the organization.
  • My reputation throughout the agency.
  • Because of that, I do not need to spend the interview proving I can be a successful Director.
  • The real question is: “Can Billy help lead Directors and move the organization forward?”
  • Why I Want This Position
  • I am not pursuing this opportunity because of the title.
  • I am pursuing it because I believe I can have a greater impact across the organization.
  • Over the last 10 years, I have learned how to lead programs, develop teams, navigate challenges, implement change, and support individuals receiving services in three different counties.
  • What excites me about this role is the opportunity to help develop leaders, strengthen consistency across the organization, support Directors, and continue building a strong culture.
  • I believe leadership is not about managing programs.
  • Leadership is about developing people.
  • What I Bring to the Role
  • Leadership Development and Unity
  • One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is helping others grow.
  • Whether it has been Program Coordinators, Supervisors, or Direct Support Professionals, I have always focused on helping people become stronger leaders.
  • Watching all three of my Program Coordinators receive agency recognition at our annual banquet was one of the proudest moments of my career because it reflected the growth and success of the people around me.
  • Organizational Perspective
  • Throughout my career, I have worked beyond the boundaries of my assigned programs.
  • I have:
  • Supported counties and programs during leadership vacancies.
  • Worked collaboratively across departments.
  • Participated on the MUI Stakeholders Committee.
  • Served on the Human Rights Committee.
  • Assisted with agency-wide initiatives and events.
  • Advocated for innovation such as Remote Supports.
  • These experiences have helped me understand the organization as a whole rather than from a single-program perspective.
  • Innovation and Growth
  • I believe strong organizations continue to evolve.
  • Whether implementing Remote Supports, creating opportunities for employee engagement, organizing agency-wide events, or helping individuals reconnect with community experiences after COVID, I have always looked for ways to improve outcomes and strengthen our culture.
  • My Biggest Accomplishment
  • My biggest accomplishment has been helping people grow.
  • Whether it was implementing Remote Supports, maintaining one of the lowest turnover rates in the agency, supporting counties without Directors, passing audits, organizing the Tennessee trip after COVID, developing award-winning Program Coordinators, or creating opportunities that strengthened morale and engagement, the common theme has always been helping people and teams become stronger.
  • Closing Statement
  • Joe, whether I am selected for this position or not, I appreciate the opportunity.
  • I have dedicated more than 11 years to Toward Independence because I believe in the mission and the people we serve.
  • I believe my experience developing leaders, supporting multiple counties, implementing innovation, maintaining quality outcomes, and building strong teams has prepared me for this opportunity.
  • If selected, my goal would be simple:
  • To strengthen leaders.
  • To strengthen teams.
  • To strengthen our culture.
  • To strengthen our organization.
  • Because when leaders grow, the entire organization grows with them.
