Adventist Health Care and Washington Adventist Hospital applied for a MCHHS Tobacco Cessation Grand. My responsibility for 2002 was to implement and develop an in-patient cessation program at Washington Adventist Hospital.
To develop an in-patient tobacco cessation program, I had to coordinate training for staff through Mayo Clinic as well as promote program through physician, nursing and staff in-services.
Recruit patients for program study.
Counsel patients/family members on quitting tobacco use.
Develop an individual customized quit plan for patients.
Maintain database & files system of patient records.
Provide follow-up and support those who are in the process of quitting tobacco use or have recently quit.
Track and evaluate program successes. Identify weakness in program and find resolutions.
Maintain an ongoing relationship with MCHHS as well as report data through monthly & annual reports as stipulated by grand.
During this time, I also became an instructor for American Lung Association and could facilitate “Freedom from Smoking”, an 8-week tobacco dependency program in our community.
I also ran a monthly support group at Washington Adventist Hospital for anyone who struggled with tobacco dependency.
