Work History

Captain

Westover Fire Department
02.2006 - Current
  • Founding Member and still part of the Westover Wildland Team — Played instrumental role in establishing the department's wildland fire response capability, serving as a key pioneer in building specialized operational capacity for vegetation and interface fires on Westover Air Force base for ecological preservation. Has responded and represented Westover fire on many Mutual Aid responses that vary in locations across the state of Massachusetts.
  • Detailed to lead extra duty assignment to the Wildland Program (4 years) under Chief Wood then Chief Bradford to provide dedicated leadership and operational expertise during critical early development phases, contributing directly to program maturation, standardization, and long-term success.
  • Designed and delivered intensive hands-on training for rescue personnel on challenging terrain as Lead Instructor for Western Mass Rescue Program, enhancing foundational skills in rigging, safety protocols, and high-angle rescue techniques, which established core competencies vital for team effectiveness in early program stages.
  • Evaluated the Western Mass Rescue Program as the primary assessor, providing critical evaluations that allowed Chief VanGorden to approve and sign off on initial grants.
  • Participated in the department's mental health peer support initiative, promoting firefighter wellness and resilience while advocating for the Ready Firefighter program to address psychological and emotional needs within the service.
  • BLS/CPR Instructor (Current: American Red Cross; Prior: Under Inspector Dave Wilkinson during MTN era) — Certified instructor delivering life-saving medical training to department personnel and external partners, maintaining high standards of emergency medical readiness.
  • Prolific Medical Instruction Leader (Since 2022) Independently taught or co-led over 23% of all classes within assigned group/crew/shift, demonstrating exceptional instructional volume and impact.
  • Medical Instruction Specialist / "Guru” Recognized experts in progressive, cutting-edge medical education; consistently integrating modern learning methodologies, including mobile learning (M-learning) platforms and advanced educational technologies, to enhance trainee engagement, boost cognitive retention, and foster sustained interest in complex medical topics.
  • Through working for, with or in charge of 5 members of a group which have become promoted positions including myself which makes 6. This ranges from the current Fire Chief to the current Health and Safety Chief, an Assistant Chief of Operations and 2 newly promoted Captains. The current Fire Chief and Health & Safety Chief reached the absolute pinnacle. My work with or for them helped sustain or enhance department wide excellence. The two newly promoted Captains are the “next generation” I personally grew. Their fresh promotions are the most visible evidence of my mentorship pipeline.
  • Central to this commitment is my personal dedication to always maintaining a strong physical fitness presence. I consistently train to stay in the best possible shape, prioritizing functional strength, cardiovascular endurance, core stability, and overall resilience to meet the extreme physical demands of our mission, whether responding to aircraft incidents, structural fires, or mutual aid calls.
  • I actively encourage my fellow firefighters to prioritize and maintain a healthy, strong physique as well. A fit team enhances performance, accelerates recovery, minimizes injury risk, and strengthens our collective readiness and safety. I lead by example and foster a culture where physical fitness is a shared responsibility and a key pillar of our safety.
  • My contributions reflect deep institutional knowledge, pioneering spirit, instructional excellence, and commitment to both operational excellence and personnel well-being, positioning myself as an indispensable asset to the Westover Fire Department.
  • Protected people, property, and the environment from fires and disasters by providing fire prevention, firefighting, rescue, and hazardous material responses using advanced emergency response skills.
