Throughout my volunteer experiences, interneships, jobs, and schooling I have learned how important education and our community is. Being able to express my passions for music and this earth, while giving back to our planet earth keeps me driven in my studies in hopes I can give back more. Moving from Tucson, AZ to Seattle, WA I have seen many different atmospheres and biomes, reinforcing my love for this planet. I now understand how my education can be of use to earth and its diverse needs.
Working as a crew member and a closer I’ve learned how to work in a fast pace environment, navigate busy days, clean large areas efficiently, take charge when needed, deal with tricky customers, follow food safety rules, learn new tasks easily, and ultimately understand how to be the best employee you can for your job. Working on the ave, I would often deal with lines out the door during understaffed shifts. During closing shifts, I would return to my dorm past midnight and still wake up fro my 8:30 classes, ready to learn. Balancing Chipotle and my first year of College I learned how to maintain many responsibilities while always performing to my best.
Tucson’s local radio station KXCI is a volunteer based community show. I had an internship position where I would assist as an audio engineer editing podcasts, reviewing CDs, working as social media coordinator, helping with kids “DJ-Camp”, and being a general assistant to the station. Working here I understood how music and non-profit work helped the voices of everyone in Tucson be heard, whether it was a student, local business owner, younger children, or local musicians. KXCI not only brought people together but raised money to support our community creating events for pride, and Black Lives Matter movements.
Volunteering at the Tucson Village Farm, I learned many skills. I would volunteer at festivals, selling hot chocolate and goods from the farm. We had the ability to help produce items for the farm, such as soaps, jewelry, art, and agriculture. HLA has such variety, I was able to work on the farm, tending to the gardens and the cows, overall building my connection to nature, community, and sustainability.
