My time in veterinary medicine has lead me to acquire experience and skills in the following categories-

Exam Room:

• Concise client communication
• Detailed record keeping
• Ability to anticipate the needs of the veterinarian
• Restraint of various types of animals including dogs, cats, birds, rodents, and reptiles

Surgery:

• Checking patients in, discussing paperwork in detail, answering/addressing client questions/concerns
• Calculating and administering pre-anesthetic medications as well as inducing and monitoring anesthesia
• Ensuring a smooth patient recovery or intervening when recovery is stormy
• Creating care instructions for the client, filling medications, and discharging the patient

Dentistry:

• All aforementioned surgical technician duties apply
• Scaling, polishing, and probing the teeth of both cats and dogs of all ages
• Obtaining full-mouth radiographs
• Ability to identify and understand abnormal processes in the mouth such as bone loss, abscesses, root resorption, gingival recession, crown fractures, etc.

Treatment Float:

• Monitoring hospitalized patients
• Completing scheduled technician appointments ranging from venipuncture and administration of medications to grooming such as nail trims, anal gland expression, etc.
• Maintaining cleanliness of the hospital as well as stocking the treatment area and keeping up with laundry
• Being available to help in any capacity

Lab/Pharmacy:

• Understanding the use and maintenance of in-house lab machines and equipment
• Preparing slides for the veterinarian to review.
• Preparing and performing fecal analyses, urinalyses, and ear/skin cytologies in-house while confidently detecting abnormalities to report to the doctor
• Accurately filling medications to dispense while understanding uses and side effects of the drugs

• My time in retail lead me to achieve experience in team work, organization, money-handling, communication skills and de-escalation.
