My name is Brennen Benson and I am a first generation student from Knox, Indiana. Growing up in a small town everyone does one of two things, you go to work in the mills or you go to college. When I graduated this is the decision that I had to make and knew that my calling was in health care. This is the very reason that I am here in attendance at Valparaiso University. Over the course of my life I've held three jobs and each one has taught me important lessons. They have taught the value of hard work, time management, take responsibility, and how to interact with the public. It all started my sophomore year of high school when I began lawn care to make quick money and did this for roughly two years. During this time period I learned how to work hard and how to take care of the equipment that I used. During my time at Culver Military Academy I learned about teamwork and the importance of communication. At Culver Military Academy we all worked in crews and had to communicate what laundry bundles go where, what garment belonged to who, cleaning, etc. My time there showed me how to work with people I didn't know and opened me to a whole new environment that I had never been exposed to before. Currently I am a pharmacy technician at CVS in Knox, Indiana and I have been exposed to so much. While there I have learned the importance of attention to detail, how to improvise, and how to multitask. My job consists of me filling prescriptions, processing prescriptions/ insurance, providing information on health and insurance, etc. As technicians we work in teams and have to communicate what medicine goes where, medicine classification, work stations, etc. By exposing myself and working in this environment I have learned that detail is very important and is in the best interest for the patient. In addition to this, being a technician has taught me how to multitask. As a technician there are many situations where you find yourself filling scripts and talking with patients over the phone along with a multiplicity of other scenarios. The jobs that I have had have taught me so much about life and have helped me to pick up new skills. Along with this, the lessons I've learned have transferred to college and have helped me be a better student.
The objective of my career is to be able to go to medical school and eventually become an orthopedic surgeon.
