Inspects new construction and remodeling projects for compliance with codes, ordinances and construction standards.
Explains code references as requested, and provides public assistance. Provides information to the public regarding building and zoning codes and inspections.
Documents inspections and assists with information to correct non-compliance situations. Conducts follow-up inspections, and monitors progress of projects.
Conducts specialized inspections related to framing, electrical, and mechanical systems. May be involved in grading and drainage inspections.
Performs plan reviews utilizing permit tracking software and drafts comments for Building Commissioner’s review.
Inspects properties for violations of the Village property maintenance code and other ordinances, tracks cases, issues citations, and appears at court.
Enters inspection results in permit tracking software. Writes notices and letters as needed.
Assists with filing, answers phone calls and provides front counter support.
Assists with the support of all positions in the department as needed.
Assists the Building Commissioner as needed.
Participate in employee committees and attends meetings as assigned.
Ability to perform mid-level data analysis including the ability to audit, deduce, assess, conclude and appraise. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established criteria to define consequences and develop alternatives.
Ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as co-workers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
Ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information, such as building permits, permits, site plans, blueprints, engineer reports, plan review reports, inspection reports, code books, lists, activity logs, maps, permit applications and correspondence.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing with builders, property owners, co-workers, the general public, developers, other Village staff, and immediate supervisor.
Ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.
This position is responsible for inspection and enforcement of properties throughout the Village for compliance with the adopted property maintenance code and certain provisions of the Municipal Code.
Responds in a timely manner to property maintenance-related complaint cases submitted to the Village for investigation and enforcement actions.
Performs routine inspections of neighborhoods and commercial properties, and inspects for violations of adopted codes and standards, working to remedy the cause of nuisances.
Documents and maintains records of violations, and prepares violation notices. Performs research, provides written correspondence, and works with other Village departments as needed to facilitate code compliance. Issues citations and represents the Village at Administrative Adjudication Hearings.
Assists staff as assigned including public counter support, and responding to citizen inquiries. Represents the department at public outreach activities. Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed and adheres to all departmental and Village safety policies. Advises supervisor of hazards and corrective actions. Performs property maintenance-related special project assignments as assigned by the Assistant Community Development Director. Received training and assists with routine, small project building permit inspections as needed. Ability to resolve property maintenance complaints working independently or as a team in a professional, courteous, and timely manner.
The ability to execute a variety of tasks in support of the primary job duties in a highly organized and efficient manner.
