  • While our battalion (Delta Company 2/504 Parachute Infantry Regiment 1st Brigade Combat Team 82nd Airborne Division) was en route to a no notice deployment to Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA), I was promoted to section leader on merit
  • Led daily mounted patrols around HKIA to ensure that we had border security, detaining over 125 individuals that were deemed a threat to coalition forces on the base
  • Led a section of eight paratroopers in crowd control operations when tens of thousands of civilians and enemy combatants breached the airfield
  • Worked with US State Department Officials at the gates of HKIA to ensure safe passage to American visa and passport holders
  • Served as a turret gunner and driver (under night vision) when smaller group of more experienced groups of paratroopers were needed for certain operations
  • Earned my Combat Infantryman Badge for satisfactory duty under hostile fire
  • Returning from our deployment, I was graded the highest of four section leaders in a training exercise that involved maneuvering and emplacing ambushes and defensive positions despite having the lowest rank of specialist
