The Houston Area Women's Center - August2024-May2025

Student intern who oversee the safety, general welfare, and day-to-day needs of the women and children staying in the domestic violence shelter while working in different departments such as case management and Economic Empowerment Programs. Assisting clients through the acclimation process of living in a communal environment by providing peer counseling/support, education, and mentoring. Time spent conducting individual orientations, intakes, group house meetings, exit processes etc.  enforce residential policies to ensure compliance with grantors and funding sources. With the Economic Empowerment Program I provided one on one coaching to understand current financial needs and develop goals towards economic empowerment (increasing income, managing debt, improving career opportunities, building savings, acquiring assets) Including, but not limited to:

Student intern who experiences included individuals with substance abuse issues, mental health conditions and homelessness. Assist residents with daily needs (mail, toiletries, OTC meds, questions and concerns, etc.). Assist Case Manager with daily task, responsibilities, and meetings with residents. Also assist the intake department with answering calls regarding information about Star of Hope and assessing potential individuals or families looking to enter the facility for shelter. Assessments includes client’s mental health, substance abuse if any, domestic violence history, and personal history.
