  • Structured care for up to 3 babies per shift depending on patient acuity in the Wakemed level IV NICU
  • Facilitated the management of conditions including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN), gastroschisis, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), hypoglycemia, meconium aspiration, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), sepsis, jaundice, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and high bilirubin levels (jaundice)
  • Performed excellent care with extremely low and very low birth weight neonates (ELBW’s and VLBW’s), respiratory failure that needs bubble CPAP, non-invasive ventilation (NIV), neurally adjusted ventilatory support (NAVA), high frequency jet ventilator (HFJV), and high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV)
  • Performed assistance with providers for central line placement (UAC, UVC, PICC), lumbar punctures, intubations, needle aspirations, in and out surfactant administration, and bedside and operating room surgeries.
  • Monitored vital signs and assessed health status of critically ill neonates.
  • Administered medications and provided intravenous therapy per established protocols.
  • Completed a 12 week orientation for both low and high acuity patients and obtained skills including neonatal assessments, ventilator and respiratory management, IV insertion, arterial sticks, safe practice with central lines (UVC, UAC, PICC, broviac), neonatal resuscitation, feeding techniques, experience with isolettes, warmers, phototherapy, EPOC and glucometer devices, and cooling machines.
  • Participated as a member of the work life committee as a co-chair, preceptor for new and experienced nurses, spent 9 months as a Newborn Specialist that attended every delivery that shift and provided care for all neonates in their first few hours of life, a GPS mentor to our new hires to help them along their journey in the NICU, and a member of the Tiny Tot Team for our ELBW/VLBW neonates, and a member of the Feeding Taskforce with other interdisciplinary teams to improve feeding outcomes and promote success that ultimately support growth and development in neonatal populations.
