Work History

Freelance Contributor

The Independent (UK)
Los Angeles, CA
01.2021 - 12.2021

Wrote on a wide variety of topics including news, current affairs, and entertainment.

Also generated story ideas for international news desk and contributed as an op-ed writer.

Key takeaway: we need to be first with this, how long before you file?

Contributing Writer/Screenwriter

The Likely Suspects
Los Angeles, CA
01.2000 - 12.2021

The glossy magazine chapter of my career - GQ, Vanity Fair and The Sunday Times magazine in the UK. Lots of research, fact-checking, and agonizing over which clever word might work best.

I did my share of celebrity interviews - everyone from Redford, Newman, Poitier and Connery to Pfeiffer, Blanchett, and Theron - but the most memorable moments were the human interest stories - Mandela and Robben Island; hunting with the bushmen of the Kalahari; the rise of authoritarian leaders throughout Latin America; Ernest Lehman's remarkable screenwriting career in Hollywood; Francisco 'Pipin' Ferreras setting a world record for deep free-diving. Those are the ones that stayed with me.

Key takeaway: all that glitters is not gold.

During this period I also began writing screenplays, specializing in adaptations of novels. Some of them made it all the way, others languished in development hell, and quite a few never got off the ground. I also became a go-to guy for doctoring broken screenplays that needed some intensive care.

Some of the books I adapted for film: The Bone Collector, The Sum of all Fears, Jigsaw, The Devil in the White City, Typhoon and 1421: The Year China Discovered America.

Key takeaway: if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Freelance Contributor

The Sunday Times (UK)
Los Angeles, CA
01.1998 - 12.2008

West coast contributing editor for The Sunday Times. Generated feature stories and conducted interviews with a wide range of celebrities, directors, and entertainment industry power brokers. Also covered breaking news stories for Britain's premiere Sunday broadsheet.

Key takeaways: fact check, fact check, fact check. This is The London Sunday Times.

Freelance Contributor

The Independent (UK)
Los Angeles, CA
01.1998 - 12.2002

Wrote on a wide variety of topics from Los Angeles, contributing news, features and thought provoking entertainment stories for prestigious UK broadsheet.

Key takeaways: we expect quality writing, so step it up. And get it right the first time; no do overs!

Contributing Writer

Associated Newspapers (UK)
Los Angeles, CA
01.1995 - 12.1997

Generated news, features, and magazine articles from New York and Los Angeles for all three of Associated Newspapers major titles - the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, and YOU magazine.

Key takeaways: deadlines are shorter on the west coast and the editors want it now.

Feature Writer

News Limited (UK)
London, United Kingdom
01.1994 - 12.1994

Staff writer at Today newspaper, contributing general feature writing and showbiz assignments for UK tabloid.

Key takeaway - "Who's Michael Bolton?"

Features editor: "That's your job to find out."

Learned to think on my feet, do my research, and show up on time.

News Reporter

Scottish Daily Express
Glasgow, UNITED KINGDOM
01.1992 - 12.1993

Covered all the usual news beats for the best selling British tabloid - crime, politics and current affairs. Also contributed feature stories and interviews.

Key takeaway: don't think too hard about the intro; copy must be delivered by 7pm.

Trainee Reporter

Glasgow Evening Times
Glasgow, UNITED KINGDOM
10.1986 - 10.1990

I learned everything about the inner workings of a big city evening newspaper, first as a copyboy, then as a trainee reporter. Covered courts, crime and city hall. Chased politicians down the corridors of power; followed up with the police department on incident reports; interviewed TV celebrities and film stars; reported on rugby and soccer matches.

Key takeaways: don't ask stupid questions and quote accurately.
