Volunteer Experience

Classrooms Across Cultures: 2003- 2013, I was director and founder of this nonprofit, through which I taught science and trained teachers in Afghanistan. It was an unpaid, volunteer position. I traveled 13 times to Afghanistan for 4-6 weeks each to teach or train. I lived in with local families and exchanged cultural information and friendship with Afghan colleagues and people I met. This experience is described more fully in my work history. I also gave a TED talk about my work. The link for the TED talk is in the "links" section.

Prior Volunteer Experience:

Girl Scout Troop Leader for both Brownies and Cadets

Tiger Cub (BSA) troop leader

Leader and Director of two different weeklong service trips to the Hoopa Indian reservation in Northern California. These trips were sponsored by my church, but were not religious in nature. Rather, I organized other volunteers to do service work such as painting houses, plumbing repairs, medical clinics, and vacation classes for children. We lived on the reservation. Hoopa Elders taught us Native American life ways, shared their history and historic lodging, We took part in a drum circle led by a native elder.

Leader and Director of a week-long service trip to the H'Mong community in Fresno. This trip was sponsored by my church but was not religious in nature. Our volunteers lived in H'Mong community housing. Our goal was to help first-generation H'Mong families become familiar with life in America, through activities and classes aimed at children of recently arrived families. We also exchanged much cultural information, learning from the H'Mong about their culture.

2011: Science Fair: I organized the first successful and well-attended science fair in a majority Latino elementary school in Esparto, CA
