  • As a veteran teacher and former evaluator I am able to set high standards and expectations in the classroom to prepare my students to be responsible citizens. I prepare them for the college experience and for the responsibility of participating in our democratic republic.
  • Classroom teacher responsibilities:
  • Planning and implementing concept-based lessons linked to Common Core Standards, Depth of Knowledge Levels, and 21st century skills;
  • Utilizing Bloomboard/EdReflect as a tool to manage, assess and track my goals and ability to exceed teaching standards;
  • Managing and maintaining classroom discipline through the use of regular classroom routines and differing behavior rubrics and strategies;
  • Assessing student learning through a variety of formative and summative assessments;
  • Communicating progress and successes in class to students, parents, and guidance counselors, and
  • Using PowerSchool as an aide in keeping students and parents updated on students’ overall performance in class.

  • As Department Chair responsible for supervising, evaluating, scheduling, and ordering for a seventeen-member department; Creating and implementing the departmental budget including defending requests for supplies, textbooks, and additional staff based on current enrollment of students and available teachers; Creating, organizing, and participating in hiring committees for new staff; Assigning teachers to courses and classrooms in coordination with the other department chairs and administration; and Leading the department in rewriting curriculum documents in concept-based format. Additional responsibilities included:
  • Organization and implementation of schoolwide plans and programs as part of the Leadership Team;
  • Evaluation of teachers;
  • Working as a cooperating teacher to several novice teachers who currently work in Brookfield, Wilton, Cape Cod and New York;
  • Bringing in local and state politicians—including Governor M. Jodi Rell, to speak with the students about real-world political experiences;
  • Participating in the K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Committee and changing the curriculum format to Lynne Erickson’s concept-based approach;
  • Teaching all academic levels and most subject areas within the social sciences;
  • Co-Chaired the District Curriculum Council and streamlined the process of writing curriculum in the district and transitioned into Rubicon Atlas, a curriculum mapping and sharing program;
  • Graduated from the Education Policy Fellows Program (EPFP) sponsored by ACES in Hamden, attended the national conventions in Phoenix December 2008 and Washington, DC in April 2009;
  • Presented Professional Development Workshops on: Making Thinking Visible, Understanding by Design; Taking the CAT assessment; MLA guide for research and writing; Classroom Management, and Reading Across the Disciplines.

  • Served as President of the NFT for a two-year term. Represented the teachers of Newtown at the state level and was the main contact between the Federation and the AFT-CT. Additional responsibilities included:
  • Negotiating the 2007-2010 teachers’ contract between the Federation and the Board of Education;
  • Attending Board of Education meetings and addressing the members on behalf of the NFT membership;
  • Mediating disputes between teachers and administrators throughout the district;
  • Conducting meetings of the Executive Council handling contractual and legal questions, while working in conjunction with the AFT-CT attorney;
  • Meeting on a regular basis with the superintendent of schools to discuss problems and issues that arose, and
  • Working as a liaison between the insurance administrator and the faculty to solve problems and get answers to questions regarding changes to insurance policy.
