Built a fully functional lava lamp using a half gallon mason jar, paraffin wax, kosher salt, dish soap, a copper spring, oil coloring dye, brakleen, aluminum can, incandescent light bulb. The glass mason jar offered a clear view of the wax and its chemical properties allowed it to withstand the temperature changes. The paraffin wax was chosen because it is insoluble in water with a density that can be altered with the addition of other oils. The salt helps control the motion of the wax and a small amount of dish soap promotes wax separation. The copper spring controls the flow of wax up the jar. The oil dye is used to color the wax given the waxes nonpolar characteristics. Brakleen's purpose is to increase the density of paraffin wax. The aluminum can acts as the base where the incandescent light bulb can provide heat for the jar.
