Volunteer Experience

  • Mathare, Africa, 06/2017, Lead role in organizing fund-raising efforts for myself and other volunteer to travel to the second largest slum in Africa to work with special needs children and their families. Fund-raising included gathering donations for silent auctions, using a variety of different multi-media platforms to promote our cause and using interpersonal communication skills to explain to others what our mission was and gather donations in person. While there, we helped to development communication techniques; including hand crafted communication books, occupational therapy, physical therapy and direct instruction for families to implement non-verbal communication skills with their children to express wants and needs.
  • Uganda, Africa, 07/2019, Lead role in organizing fund-raising for myself and other volunteers in my group. The largest fund raising project was putting on a silent auction. While in Uganda, several volunteers including myself lead a seminar with teachers and principals in the area who wanted to learn more about including special needs children in their schools. Our seminar focused on explaining special needs as a whole; what it can look like, both physical and mental variations, what to do in case of an emergency such as a seizure and how to teach/include special needs children in the classroom.
