I have been an SLPA for 10 years. I have worked in a variety of elementary school settings, and have 2 years experience with middle school age students. I obtained my OSAT certification in 2020 as soon as the newly developed SLPA professional level exam was released. I started my speech career at Duncan Public Schools. I provided speech therapy for general education students as well as self-contained students. The next year I took an opportunity to be a contract SLPA through Stepping Stone Rehabilitation Center where I provided therapy for Empire Public Schools and Central High Public Schools. The following year I continued contract therapy for Central High part-time and Lawton Public Schools (LPS) part-time.
I began working for LPS full-time in the 2015-2016 school year. While at LPS, I have served a number of elementary schools, along with one middle school for 2 years. I have maintained an average caseload of 50 students, sometimes up to 60. During the 2020-2021 school year I was assigned virtual therapy. It was a challenge, however it was also a wonderful experience.
The students and therapy are the best parts of my career, however I also enjoy implementing and coordinating schedules, writing annual IEPs, and tracking progress in order to adjust to the student's current speech-language needs.
I have found speech therapy to be a more rewarding career than I could have imagined.
