As a deckhand on a sportfishing boat, my ultimate responsibility was to make sure the guests of the vessel were safe and had an enjoyable trip. This included loading and preparing all of the fishing gear, assuring the boat was stocked with food, ice and drinks, and assisting with whatever the captain and guests needed during fishing expeditions (unhooking fish, baiting hooks, detangling lines, etc.). I was also responsible for unloading and cleaning the boat for the next excursion. This work was not only exhausting and challenging, but it required attention to detail.
As a Swamp Kayak Tour guide, I was solely responsible for providing paid clients with a safe and informative paddle through the Manchac swamp, including ensuring waters, lifejackets, and other supplies were provided, giving historic and ecological information on the city and swamp, transporting them from the French Quarter to the swamp in a van (with kayak trailer towed), launching the kayaks, leading the group on a 2 mile paddle into and out of the swamp, and returning the group to the pickup location.
My job at Puglias, a local Hunting/Fishing Store, was to receive and unload several daily shipments before unpacking them, pricing them, and stocking them onto shelves. As I would organize and arrange shelves, I would look for any opportunity to help a customer. If they had questions about what to buy, where to fish, or where to find specific products, I would direct them to the right place. This job allowed me to build confidence in having professional, personal interactions with a wide variety of customers.
As a summer camp counselor at a local swim/tennis club, I was in responsible for managing a large number of campers, whose ages ranged from 4 to 12. The camp hosted between 60 to 100 campers during any given week. Our main focus was to keep the children safe and entertained, so we spent a lot of time swimming and playing outdoor sports and games that can accommodate large numbers of players. This job helped me to develop adaptability and flexibility, as well as an ability to multitask, while focusing on individual campers and the group simultaneously.
