Work History

Brodcast Audio Assistant

Francesco Perlangeli, George Hicks
06.2024 - 06.2024

For this event I was the Broadcast Audio assistant/Assistant to the sound engineer for the Angel City Chorale's spring performance of: Rhythms of the Americas, located at UCLA's Royce Hall. I was part of the live stream crew who set up both film and audio equipment in order to stream the event for those watching at home or overseas.

An assistant to a sound engineer for a live event plays a crucial supporting role, ensuring that the main engineer can focus on delivering high-quality sound for the audience.

My tasks:

  • Equipment Setup: Assisting in setting up sound equipment, including microphones, speakers, monitors, mixing consoles, and cables.
  • Sound Check Assistance: Helping conduct sound checks, testing microphones, and instruments, and adjusting levels as directed by the main engineer.
  • Stage Setup: Placing microphones and monitors on stage, ensuring they are correctly positioned for performers.
  • Communication: Acting as a liaison between the main engineer and performers, stagehands, or other event staff to facilitate smooth operation.
  • Problem-Solving: Quickly troubleshooting and resolving any technical issues, such as replacing faulty cables or addressing feedback problems.
  • Real-Time Adjustments: Making quick adjustments to levels, EQ, or other settings as instructed by the main engineer to maintain sound quality.
  • Monitoring Equipment: Keeping an eye on equipment to ensure everything is functioning correctly and addressing any issues that arise.
  • Equipment Breakdown: Assisting in dismantling and packing up equipment after the event, ensuring everything is safely stored and accounted for.
  • Feedback and Reporting: Providing input on what worked well and what could be improved for future events, based on observations and experiences.

Overall, an assistant to a sound engineer ensures the smooth operation of live events by supporting the main engineer in both technical and logistical aspects, contributing to a high-quality audio experience for the audience.

"The Ojai Music Festival represents an ideal of adventurous, open-minded and open-hearted programming in the most beautiful and welcoming of settings, with audiences and artists to match its aspirations. Founded in 1947, the Festival remains a hallmark for groundbreaking musical experiences with a narrative thread guided by a different music director. These annual directors are more than conductors, composers, soloists, or musicians. They are musical thinkers who approach their craft with creativity and responsibility to the present day".
