Special Education Internship

I worked as an intern in a special education program known as Project Success, catering to students with various physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities.

My internship was hands-on, multi-faceted, and incredibly invaluable to my education; I was trained in the use of assistive devices, authored papers pertaining to disability, and rotated working one-on-one with each student, learning how to assist them academically and meet their unique needs.

I assisted students with subjects such as math and English in a way that was suited to their individual learning styles, increasing engagement and optimizing their comprehension. I chaperoned students on field trips, to sessions of physical therapy at school, and assisted in group activities such as story time, science and art projects, and current world news discussions, independently curating and leading several.

Nursing Home Assistant

I volunteered as needed at The Reservoir Center for Health & Rehabilitation in Marlborough, MA, in the Activities department. I assisted with hosting events such as live music, game days like trivia and bingo, arts and crafts activities, and often transported patients to and from the department.

In my role, I made coffee, provided snacks, and guaranteed that each patient’s unique needs were met, such as adding thickener to the drinks of those with difficulty swallowing, closely monitoring others who were fall risks, and passing out blankets to those who were easily chilled. I kept the department organized and sanitary between uses, comforted those who were emotionally distressed, and socialized with patients to increase their overall satisfaction and happiness.

Best Buddies

I was given the role of Alternate Best Buddy at my high school’s Best Buddies chapter. In this role, I made myself available as a substitute to accompany students if anyone’s peer-partner was unable to be present. I attended many events and ensured that everyone was included and enjoyed themselves.
