Pre-operative nursing duties

• Conduct comprehensive pre-operative assessments, including medical history, medication reconciliation, allergies, NPO status, and baseline vital signs
• Verify informed consent, surgical site, procedure, and patient identity per Universal Protocol
• Initiate IV access and administer pre-operative medications as ordered
• Provide patient and family education regarding procedures, anesthesia expectations, and post-operative care
• Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary team to ensure surgical readiness
• Ensure compliance with infection prevention, safety, and regulatory standards (Joint Commission, CMS)
• Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately in the electronic health record

PACU / Post-Anesthesia Care Duties

• Monitor patients during Phase I and/or Phase II recovery following general, regional, or monitored anesthesia care
• Perform ongoing assessments of airway patency, respiratory status, hemodynamics, neurological status, and pain level
• Manage post-operative pain, nausea/vomiting, and other anesthesia-related complications
• Recognize and respond to post-anesthesia emergencies, including airway compromise, bleeding, or hemodynamic instability
• Administer IV fluids and medications per protocol and provider orders
• Evaluate readiness for discharge using standardized criteria (e.g., Aldrete score)
• Provide discharge education, medication instructions, and follow-up guidance to patients and caregivers
• Ensure safe patient handoff and continuity of care

Labor & Delivery Duties

• Perform comprehensive maternal and fetal assessments throughout labor, including continuous electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) and interpretation of fetal heart rate tracings
• Monitor labor progression, uterine activity, and maternal vital signs; promptly identify and respond to obstetric emergencies
• Administer and titrate medications per protocol, including oxytocin, magnesium sulfate, antibiotics, and analgesia
• Provide care and support during vaginal and operative deliveries, including preparation for emergent cesarean sections
• Assist with epidural placement and manage regional anesthesia monitoring and complications
• Initiate and maintain IV therapy; manage fluid balance and blood product administration as indicated
• Implement evidence-based interventions to promote safe labor, delivery, and maternal-fetal outcomes
• Provide emotional support, patient advocacy, and education to laboring patients and families
• Collaborate with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, neonatology, and interdisciplinary teams
• Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately in the electronic health record
• Ensure adherence to safety protocols, infection prevention measures, and regulatory standards
• Participate in emergency response for obstetric crises, including shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia/eclampsia, and fetal distress

Provided care in postpartum recovery

• Provide immediate postpartum care, including fundal checks, lochia assessment, and pain management
• Promote maternal-newborn bonding and initiate breastfeeding support and education
• Monitor for and manage postpartum complications, including hemorrhage and hypertensive disorders
• Educate patients and families on postpartum recovery, newborn care, and discharge planning
