Dominican Men’s Lacrosse Team Rules

  • Zero Tolerance Policy for Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Transphobia or any other type of hate speech or discrimination.
  • Depending on the situation this could mean immediate removal from the team or university.
  • All members of the Dominican Men’s Lacrosse program are expected to abide by the following team rules and regulations. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action for the offending individual and possibly the entire team. Disciplinary action can include additional fitness, and community activities, up to and including suspension or expulsion from the program. As a Penguin Lacrosse Player, you represent Dominican University. Consequently, all institutional rules supersede any and all team rules. You also must follow all NCAA Division 2 rules and regulations
  • BCD= This is not just about Blame, Complain, Defend, but also the little things we need to do right. It starts with these team rules and knowing that it is about competition, creating a winning culture, control the controllable, high standard, brotherhood, and no BCD! Everyone has the same goal, don’t take things personal when someone is trying to make you better.

Attendance

  • If you are sick or not feeling well, you need a doctor’s note to miss practice or lifts and you should contact Coach Grove ASAP.
  • Arriving late or missing practice without letting the coach know 10 to 24 hours before practice is against the rules. Captains’ practices or open field time are not mandatory. You do not have to attend.
  • Practice is mandatory. If an athlete has a question whether a function is an excused absence, you should contact the head coach. If you have a conflict that may require you to miss practice, you must get it approved 10 to 24 hours before practice. YOU MUST GET APPROVAL BY PHONE CALL AND NOT TEXT.
  • If you do get injured you are expected to attend all practices and games, as long as you are physically possible. Remember, you are still a part of the team. If you are injured for a long period of time and you would like a bigger role, such as helping coach or film, that is a good way to stay involved with the team.
  • Your punishments must be done before you can start practice or move on with the next drill.
  • Discipline for being late to practice OR lifts OR team events, without an excuse:
  • 1st Offense- Additional fitness and accountability buddy assigned
  • 2nd Offense- Additional fitness at the start of two practices. 2 accountability buddies assigned.
  • 3rd Offense- Additional fitness through an entire practice. 1 missed game.
  • 4th Offense or more- must attend every practice, but can’t practice and must help at practice, and 2 missed game.
  • Discipline for missing practice OR lifts OR team events, without an excuse:
  • 1st Offense- Additional fitness at the start of two practices. Accountability buddy assigned.
  • 2nd Offense- 1 Missed Game. 2 accountability buddies assigned.
  • 3rd Offense- 2 Missed Games and additional fitness for one full practice
  • 4th Offense or more- must attend every practice, but can’t practice and must help at practice and you will be suspended for the time being.
  • If the captains or coaches do not see you do any of the above disciplines, you will be disciplined further. If you do not do anything past of you will be suspend indefinitely for the season until a character meeting with coaches and captains. All fitness discipline must be done before you can participate in practice. If the fitness is not done at 100% there will be further discipline, or you will be sent home for the day and try again the next day.

Dress Code

  • Practice and Weight Room Wear
  • Practice- For all practice segments once players are issued team apparel and equipment, athletes are expected to wear team gear and or team colored apparel (white, black, yellow). No current college teams gear is permitted. Any athlete not in line with the dress code will have to change before starting practice. (Note- prior to being issued team equipment, athletes are free to wear any equipment).
  • S&C- For all strength and conditioning segments athletes are to wear team issued apparel and or team colored apparel (white, black, yellow). No current college teams apparel are permitted. Athletes must also wear appropriate footwear (athletic shoes and or cleats when designated). If you show up to the workout not in line with the dress code, you’ll have to change before you join in.
  • Travel Attire
  • All athletes will be issued a travel warm-up to be worn to and from all away games. If we have a day in between a game you do not have to wear the warm up, but you must wear Dominican gear. You are allowed to wear a hat if it has Dominican on it. Under-shirts must be tucked in. Let’s make sure to represent Dominican and look good. You must wear team Shooter, or Sweatshirt on the bus.
  • If we are flying team dress will be determined prior to the trip by staff and captain decisions. All student-athletes must pack a pair of khakis and a nice shirt on road trips. This will be standard attire for team dinners unless told otherwise.

Eligibility

  • You must follow all NCAA Division 2 eligibility rules as laid out in the NCAA D2 handbook that you can access here: https://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/D222.pdf
  • IF YOU HAVE BELOW A 2.0 YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY NO MATTER WHAT. You will be expected to still practice and attend all practices as well as attend all team events, but you will not be able to participate in the games or travel.
  • Everyone must earn their spot on the field; nothing will be handed to you. Depth chart will be very important this season.
  • There will be a travel roster of around 35 players per trip.
  • If you do not travel with the team, you are still expected to practice with the other members of the team who are not on the travel roster. We will have a volunteer assistant or upperclassman leader who will run these practices. Work on getting better so you don’t get left behind again. The only exception is Spring Break, if you are not on the travel roster for spring break you are allowed to go home.

Practice/Practice Attitude Rules

  • Practice plans and practice split will come out Monday before the next week, it is expected that you review the practice plan and practice split before each practice. Please go to the digital playbook to review this every practice day. You must also always have your notebook with you for all practices, games, lifts, IQ sessions, and film sessions. All practices will have some film on Qsideline, we would like you to review the film on your own time.
  • Hustle and hard work is an expectation. Max effort in drills, no walking on the field, once you cross the line onto the field you’re all in. You get one warning, if you are warned a second time you will be sent home for the day and can return the next practice.
  • Practice will be fast paced, high energy, to maximize reps. Athletes should review practice plans prior to practice, plans are posted every Monday by midday.
  • If there is any talking back to the coaches or captains or disrespect shown toward coaches, captains, or other players the whole team will run as this is considered BCD. If it is the second warning/offense for the day that player will be sent home for the day and can return the next practice.
  • You must hold each other accountable; it can’t just be the coaches. If someone is not following these rules, hold them accountable.
  • You must be suited the day before a game to be eligible to play in that game.
  • Communication is the expectation on and off the field. Hold the standard, over communicate to minimize issues. Habits built in practice echo in games and beyond the field.
  • Play through everything, if there is a penalty in practice during a drill, that player needs to stop and run to the sideline and do 10 push-ups, we will continue to play through the drill and the one team will be man down while he does his push-ups. If it is not a man down possible drill that player will just do 10 push-ups.
  • If you get a bad penalty in a game each penalty is additional fitness at the next practice as a team.
  • We will send guys home if they are not working hard in practice, you get 1 warning, on the second warning you will be sent home. Bad attitude or not working hard means you are out of practice (Sent home) but can come back the next day. Captains and Coaches can give warnings, but coaches can only send guy’s home.
  • No throwing gear, if you throw any of your gear, helmets, gloves, sticks, etc. Or hit the ground out of anger with your gear you will be sent home for the day even if it is your first warning for the day. It is unacceptable. If it happens in a game, you will be benched for the game. Respect your gear like you respect each other.
  • If there is a referee in a drill no matter the call do not say anything or talk back, if you do it will be a warning.
  • Practice is broken up into different goals and purposes. In the fall the focus is technical development and chemistry, in the fall is game prep and planning. Working hard in practice is the bare minimum.

Game Day Rules

  • We need to model sportsmanlike behavior as individuals and a team. Maintaining professional standards of language, appearance and behavior are key. On Game Days you are a representation of the University, Team, Staff and family and will act accordingly.
  • No bad language on the sideline, only time bad language is allowed is in the huddle. No profane language is allowed to the other bench or table.
  • No phones allowed in the locker room on gameday.
  • No throwing gear, if you throw any of your gear, helmets, gloves, sticks, etc. Or hit the ground out of anger with your gear. At a game, you will be benched. Respect your gear like you respect each other.
  • Control the Controllable
  • The only people who can talk to the referee or say anything about the referee during the game is Coach Grove, the box coach, and 1 speaking captain. Do not complain about it on the sideline or during the game. If this happens you will be asked to take a break, if it happens a second time you will be benched for the game.
  • Complaining in a game or getting upset about non calls or play time visually to the team could be grounds for removal from the sideline. Don’t worry about yourself, worry about the team if there is an issue set a meeting to speak to the Coaching Staff.

Line Up/Depth Chart Rules

  • The people who play in games will be determined through practice and off field effort. If you play 100% on offense or defense, but not 100% in clearing, riding, offense, defense, and overall effort then you will not get playing time. If you don’t work as hard in the gym as you do on the field that can effect play time. You need to be at lifts.
  • If you get lots of warning for effort, attitude, and all the above team rules that will affect your play time and depth chart standing.
  • If you have a problem with where you are on the depth chart then talk to the coaches, ask how you can do better.
  • Once the depth chart is released you do not text the coaches, you can talk to them in person at the next practice…or you can set up a meeting.
  • We are an open door, but respect our decision and focus on what you can do better.
