As part of a team, I proofread the entire book of Proofs: A Long-Form Mathematic Textbook, which Dr. Cummings published in January 2021. I corrected any English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary, and any Math notation that could be found. In addition to making the necessary corrections, I also submitted examples that provided further clarity on some of the more difficult proofs. As a student who went through those classes, I knew that providing additional examples in certain situations would aid the students tremendously, and Dr. Cummings agreed. After proofreading and making notes, we would meet to discuss the proposed changes. This professional communication and collaboration effort has had a lasting impact on my personal and professional experience; it was quite challenging, yet a pleasure in cooperation.
During the semester of Fall 2018, I worked as a teaching assistant to professor Robertson for his Statistics class. Throughout that time, he would often assign practice exercises for the last hour of class. He and I would then go around assisting students with any questions on the assignments. After class period, I had office hours where students could come to see me for additional help on the homework and lecture questions. The students seemed very receptive and responded well to this format.
I taught MLSK 7A (Making Sense of Algebra). This course reviewed fundamental mathematical concepts, measurement geometry, and beginning Algebra. I created lesson plans and quizzes, graded exams and assigned final grades.
During the first part of my tenure as an Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) at Math Learning Skills, I handled the basic duties of a teaching assistant such as grading homework and in-class tutoring for MLSK 7A (Making Sense of Algebra). In addition, I was an instructional student assistant for MLSK 10A (Elementary Algebra with Geometry). MLSK 10A is a structured tutorial format in the computer lab, using Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS), which is a web-based program. After getting accepted to graduate school, I was able to become a Teaching Associate, which allowed me to teach MLSK 7A (Making Sense of Algebra). This course reviewed fundamental mathematical concepts, measurement geometry, and beginning Algebra. I created lesson plans and quizzes, graded exams and assigned final grades. To help with grading home/classwork, a teaching assistant was assigned to me. In addition, one summer, I taught a workshop which was an accelerated version of MLSK 7A.
I was a waitress for 6 years and also served in a supervisory role for 3 of those years. As the supervisor of the shift, I was entrusted with ensuring the smooth functioning of the restaurant, which included making sure there was proper staffing (waitresses, cooks etc.), answering calls, and even doing waitress duties during peak times or staffing shortages. Before closing, I would ensure there was a sufficient amount of inventory for the next shift, and, if not, order the necessary products to properly stock the restaurant. In addition to supervisory duties, I was tasked with training new waitresses during shifts until they could get their own station.
