Environmental Educator and Atelierista

I have been with Turning Sun School since May of 2014. Since the beginning of my employment journey I have held the positions of Lead Educator, Multi-Classroom Educator, Mentor Educator, Curriculum Coordinator, Environmental Educator, Atelierista, and Summer Camp Director. I have been in leadership since 2017 with Turning Sun, a Reggio Emilia inspired, collaborative learning preschool in Atlanta, GA. We are proud to be a part of the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance and Georgia’s Farm to Preschool movement, State of GA/DECAL certified.

In my current role, I observe and document the student's interests within the classroom and collaborate with educators to create an inquiry based, individualized curriculum. I work to connect our classroom learning experiences with the greater community of Atlanta by inviting experts to work alongside the children and making the children's work, ideas, and contributions visible throughout our city by planning relevant excursions. I support and advocate for play as the greatest means of learning for children. I support a strong image of the child as capable citizens of our community and world. I continuously investigate, research, and expand my knowledge on subjects pertaining to child development and education. I work to educate the whole child by focusing on social, emotional, and physical development.

My duties include but are not limited to:

  • Documenting and displaying the learning process
  • Creating a child-led curriculum for each individual classroom
  • Providing an inspired environment to act as the "third teacher" within the building, as well as growing and maintaining all the school gardens and outdoor spaces
  • Communicating and collaborating with coworkers, parents, and members of the community on an ongoing basis
  • Attending educational seminars/ teacher exchanges, ongoing training and professional development, as well as leading planning/project meetings, and collaborative meetings
  • Supporting our student's learning processes within the classrooms with developmentally appropriate experiences
  • Connecting children to the environment, local community, nature, and the arts
  • Planning and implementing all schoolwide festivals and celebrations
  • Helping children to navigate and negotiate relationships, conflict resolution, and collaborative learning
  • Celebrate the wonder, joy, curiosity, capability, and intelligence of young children
