Work History

Special Education 4th-5th Grade Self Contained MID

Sims Elementary
2022.07 - 2024.05
  • At Sims Elementary I began teaching with a 4th grade self-contained MID Classroom and moved up with the same class to 5th grade the next year. Here I was in charge of:
  • Planning and Teaching Lessons, Creating a schedule of duties for my amazing Paraprofessionals, Teaching life-skills (cooking, tying shoes, etc.), Social Skills, Developmental Skills as well as adhering to Georgia based on grade curriculum, Creating classroom behavioral expectation along with a token economy to reinforce positive behavior and discourage target behaviors, Creating a classroom schedule, Collaborating with others in my department as well as across departments, Fostering Social relationships within the classroom and including students in general education, Mentoring students on life issues (divorce, deaths in families, etc.), Accompanying students to lunch and recess which we so proudly integrated with the general education populace, Planning and implementing meaningful field trips (Georgia Aquarium, Fernbank, Apex Black History Museum, among many others), Creating and upholding a welcoming, warm, and rewards based classroom that promoted questions and passion within, Learning what each students' particular interests were and including these in my lessons and plans (Transformers, Dinosaurs, My Little Pony, Etc.), Fostering and maintaining meaningful relationships with parents and relatives in my students lives which included speaking to each parent at least twice a week to update them on their students' progress and challenges, among many other duties and services.
  • Within this environment I taught Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and ELA. Since each student had varying levels of abilities within each subject differentiation was key to my everyday work. I truly believe meeting a student at their needs as opposed to focusing on what they can not do is crucial to a learning environment. Accomplishments within this classroom includes all of my students graduating and going to middle school together, Achieving Teacher of the Year for the 23-24 Teaching year, Developing and implementing a meaningful boys mentoring club which served all types of students in the school, Managing a school garden, and Assisting with Theater and Art Clubs.
