As a 0861 Fire Support Marine attention to detail is everything. In some cases, there may be a maneuver element within danger close range of impacts from artillery, naval, or aircraft ordnances. Attention to friendly unit positions, enemy positions, and fire support agency positions in order to prevent fratricide is the most important aspect of the job. Another skill is critical thinking and timely decision making. What to attack a target with and when to attack a target is a decision that has to be made fast in order to meet intent of the commander. As a Corporal of Marines, I've also gained significant leadership skills with the junior Marines under me. Demanding the best from my Marines is most important in order to make a product better than myself.
As a junior enlisted (E3 and below) forward observer/ fire support Marine I am responsible for planning, conducting , observing, and controlling artillery and naval surface fires. As i progressed through my career in the Marine Corps I gained more responsibilities and trust and confidence from my leadership and attended Joint Fires Observer Course EWTGPAC in January 2023. At JFOC, I attended 1 week of classroom learning and 1 week of practical application in order to request, control, and adjust joint mortar, field artillery, and naval surface fire support (NSFS); provide targeting information for close air support (CAS), Terminal Guidance Operations (TGO), Initial Terminal Guidance (ITG) operations, SOF Gunship Call for Fire, Army Attack Aviation Call for Fire, and joint fire support planning at the company level. After attending and passing JFOC i've had countless hours preforming the duties listed above and would go on to deploy (May 2023) on a company fire support team in support of V2/1 Golf company. During deployment I promoted to the rank of Corporal (E4) and now have a section of junior Marines under my charge that im responsible for training, teaching, and mentoring while also maintaining my knowledge of the MOS. I currently have 1 year left and will be EASing from active duty May 17th 2025 with a honorable discharge.
