  • Assist in the preparation of compounded sterile products using aseptic technique according to Central Admixture Pharmacy Services (CAPS) Standard Operating Procedures and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) 797 guidelines for sterile compounding. CAPS serves as an outsourcing IV pharmacy to approximately thirty hospitals in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
  • Review orders and prescriptions for admixing and dispensing to ensure that all patient orders are being safely prepared and dispensed.
  • Provide clinical recommendations regularly with hospital-staffed pharmacists to assist them with achieving optimal care for their inpatients.
  • Directly supervise pharmacy technicians, interns and support staff within the IV compounding room.
  • Operate APEX compounding machines which are used in the process of compounding of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) products. These machines are automated and uses bar-coded technology and have the capability of attaching twenty-six ingredients. These ingredients consists of electrolytes and base solutions that can be added at a particular volume within a particular inpatient's IV bag based on the order and dosing written by their hospital clinician.
  • Participate with the total cleandown process of the IV compounding room that is performed weekly with the goal of minimizing any potential opportunity for growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, mildew, fungus or mold.
  • Inject manual additions into total parenteral nutrition (TPN) bags when it is called upon to do so including highly sensitive drugs like insulin and Vitamin K and for various ingredients when the volume prescribed is too low to be measured by the APEX compounding machine.
  • Check for any critical dosing values within the CAPS' Lance pharmacy system to ensure that clinicians have prescribed electrolytes and base solutions within acceptable range.
  • Collaborate and strategize with fellow pharmacist colleagues on a day-to-day basis within the IV compounding room which includes directing technicians on which assignments to perform and overseeing that the total parenteral nutrition (TPN) products are being compounded in the correct order according to the hospitals' hang-time so that the courier delivery can be delivered to each hospital prior to the start time of their inpatients' infusion.
  • Provide on-call services to our hospital customers by responding to any inquiries or questions that they may have after-hours and compound emergency total parenteral nutrition (TPN) products when needed.
