Responds to alarms of fire or other emergencies in accordance with department procedures. After being certified: drives apparatus, operates fire pumps, and auxiliary equipment. Lays and connects hose, holds nozzles, and directs fog, chemical and water streams. Raises and climbs ladders, uses chemical extinguishers and a variety of other portable and related equipment. Participates in training sessions and attends classes in firefighting, hazardous materials, rescue, emergency medical treatment, and related subjects. Responds to calls for emergency services, prepared to perform life saving techniques and other onsite care of victims if required. Responds to emergency calls for drowning, various rescue situations, accidents and natural or other catastrophes. Performs a wide variety of general custodial and maintenance work in the upkeep of department apparatus, equipment, and station. Cleans and washes walls and floors. Washes, hangs, and dries hose. Washes, cleans, and polishes apparatus.

Provides security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities; maintain security of an assigned area or post. Provides security and supervision over inmate work crews; escorts inmates to work sites; inventories and controls all equipment, weapons, tools and keys. Patrols yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories and work areas on an assigned shift; observes activities and movements of inmates; manages inmate conduct, work and discipline. Maintains order and discipline in programs and during meals and recreation periods; inspects living areas, facilities and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials; makes reports on incidents. Operates manually or electronically controlled security equipment maintaining controlled movement of inmates, staff and the public. Conducts inmate counts; performs searches of inmates and living quarters for contraband; enforces institutional rules and regulations. Prepares written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status and movement. Participates on escape and apprehension teams; responds to riots and fires.

The Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) are teams of highly-trained corrections officers tasked with responding to incidents, riots, cell extractions, mass searches, or disturbances in prisons, possibly involving uncooperative or violent inmates.
