Research Experience

Research Assistant

Center for Women, Gender, and Global Leadership, Howard University May 2021- April 2023

  • This summer research project aimed to document gender diversity across Howard University's colleges and schools, by historicizing women's role in academia overtime. This project consisted of an anthology of reports covering various departments and schools across campus while highlighting the contributions of women to academia at Howard University.
  • Report consisted of a historical mapping of women's entry into an individual department (School of Social Work) while tracing changes in the representation and roles of women over time and developments of women in higher education.
  • Conducted a content analysis of demographic and historical data on five female deans, two female associate deans, five female directors, three female chairs, and 240 female professors.
  • Conducted a report on the historical background on the School of Social Work, and future projections of gender diversity of the department in the next 5-10 years. Future projections revealed that women will continue to exemplify strength in numbers for academic and educational leadership roles for Howard University School of Social Work based on historical and current information that has represented women as trailblazers and contemporary change agents at Howard University.
  • Future projections revealed that expectations are persistent for men to still hold roles as academic professors, directors, program chairs, and deans for Howard University School of Social Work.
  • Assisted Principal Investigator, Dr. Josephine Dawuni of Howard University, Research Assistant, Mouhamadou Hoyeck, and other graduates students of Howard University, with data collection, data analysis, and writing the completed reports on findings from Howard University's School of Social Work.

  • This project aimed to explore the relationship between oxytocin, social bonds, and suicidality or depression among veterans of the most recent wars. Interviewed with 86 veterans including mental health screenings focusing on current and past history of depression and suicidal thoughts. The vets also provided biological samples which were analyzed for oxytocin, methylation, and genotype
  • Conducted semi-structured interviews, mental health screenings, and self-reported questionnaires with 86 veterans for data collection and escorted them to nurse's station for biological samples
  • Coded quantitative data for participants in SPSS and used multiple linear regression to synthesize data with research team members.

  • This project aimed to understand how to develop prevention programs for African American youth in single parent households and to bring awareness to the various factors that assist in the influence of decision making and risk taking and making positive healthy choices
  • Conducted semi-structured interviews with 24 children/adolescents that asked about health behaviors including alcohol use, sexual behavior, and others related to diet, sleep, and exercise. The tasks were assessments of decision making and attention. The children and the caregiver also provided their height,weight, waist/hip circumference and blood pressure. Assisted in conducting tasks that focused on speed, memory, and risk taking for the caregiver and the child.
