A medical outreach project in the underserved community called Estrachura, El-Salvador (South America). The community lacks clean portable water supply. Their only water supply is the lagoon which has a high concentration of hard salts. They also have insufficient healthcare facilities. The community suffers high morbidity of kidney stones, hypertension and diabetes. I and my group intervened in the following capacities:

  • Designed a simple portable water purification system using local plastic containers, several layers of fine sand and activated charcoal. Trained adult community members how to use the blood pressure-measuring devices and drafted blood pressure reading charts.
  • Trained adult community members how to safely check blood glucose levels using blood glucose measurement devices and strips and drafted blood glucose reading charts.
  • Provided a communication channel between the trained community locals and the herd nurses who visit only twice weekly in order to evaluate their blood pressure and blood glucose level readings for recommendation to the community physician.
  • Provided basic menstrual hygiene education and care for female adolescents.
