I had the privilege of serving as a member of the specialized Stabilization Training Assistance Reintegration (STAR) unit, where I rendered nursing services to patients with developmental disabilities during their reintegration into the community. The scope of nursing care delivered encompassed wound care, bowel care, seizure management, ostomy care and skills of daily living. I also participated in case management meetings to discuss appropriate community placement, reintegration of clients back in to the community and performed routine chart auditing.
I served as a registered nurse at a Crisis Stabilization Unit for Solano County, where an individual's safety was evaluated in terms of their ability to care for themselves, as well as any potential risk to themselves or others. This emergent psychiatric facility served as a 24-hour evaluation facility. In my nursing capacity, I was responsible for administering emergency medications and liaising with unit psychiatrists, physicians, law enforcement, and other ancillary staff to meet the individualized needs of all patients. I monitored for emerging symptoms of mental illness and communicated with psychiatrist to provide treatment as ordered. I also observed for complications associated with withdrawal from various substances including but not limited to alcohol, methamphetamine and narcotics. My approach involved providing responsive and compassionate nursing care, collecting collateral data, in conjunction with assessing patients who required extended care and referring them to appropriate longer-termed facilities.
