  • Assessment and evaluation of newborns at cesarean sections following delivery, obtain footprints, administer medications, and assist mothers with breastfeeding. Monitor newborns that are in the newborn procedure room. Documentation of all assessments, procedures, and communications to physicians.
  • Monitor infants post-PPV administration at delivery, for signs of respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, cardiac concerns, and any other abnormal findings or concerns and obtain further orders or consult requests to the NICU from physician.
  • Assist physicians with circumcisions and other procedures that may be required for newborns, such as extra digit removal, frenectomies, or sutures, if necessary for the infant.
  • Notify the appropriate physician of all deliveries attended.
  • Maintain patient privacy by following HIPAA guidelines. Treat all patients and families respectfully.
  • Place orders received from physicians and notify proper department to complete physician orders. Notify physician of results of any tests performed.
  • Perform car seat studies for late preterm infants, bathe infants, hearing screens, transcutaneous bilirubin screening, and conduct CCHD screenings.
  • Monitor SGA/LGA/GDM/LPT infants and treat with glucose gel and supplementation as needed.
  • Comfort families who experience a loss and provide appropriate infant care and resources for the family.
  • Communicate with coworkers and other departments regarding possible deliveries or patient status changes. Provide end of shift report.

  • Greet families, and inform them of the visitation policy and rules of the NICU. Set up NICVIEW webcams for families. Make arrangements for parent rooms, as needed.

  • Enter orders for patients as physicians write them, fax them to the appropriate departments, and take the chart and a copy of the orders to the bedside RN.
  • Update the census sheets, the nightly weight sheet, and communicate census updates to security.
  • Order and stock supplies for the unit. Stock linens for the unit as needed. Assist with getting the necessary equipment needed for new admissions or bed changes.
  • Glucometer QC checks are performed daily, and daily charges for each infant are entered after midnight.
