Work involves supervising a shift responsible for receiving emergency 911 and non-emergency calls for Police, Fire, Rescue and Emergency Medical Services, and dispatching such calls to appropriate service

Duties include:

  • Supervise shift engaged in answering emergency 911 and non-emergency calls, and enter data into the Computer Aided Dispatching System, dispatching such calls to appropriate service (Police, Fire, Rescue, Emergency Medical Service)
  • Provide emergency instructions such as CPR to callers
  • Assign warrants and protection orders that must be entered into METERS/NCIC and ensure that quality control checks are performed
  • Responsible for daily oversight and supervision of CTO's and, in the event of an absence, filling in for a CTO
  • Respond to callers under stress and that require emergency medical dispatch training
  • Monitor operations and work of personnel; trains and mentors' new workers; counsels' workers, approves leave, appraises performance; completes time sheets
  • Receive, sends and processes teletypes and other METERS requests for the county
  • Monitor public and emergency service radio frequencies
  • Uses computer to access Criminal Justice Information Systems to obtain information for law enforcement officers and other authorized personnel
  • Prepare control cards and maintain logs of calls, complaints, tests, time checks and other actions
  • Maintain operating statistics / detailed shift summary reports
  • Monitor alarm systems at the center and dispatches appropriate service when activated; monitors security cameras at the center
  • Places calls for repairs to radios, pagers and other communications devices
  • Maintain procedure manuals and files
  • Notify parties of government closings at the discretion of county officials
  • Make notifications of major incidents to administrative staff
  • Performs lead Public Safety Communications work for the County's central communications control center

The Public Safety Emergency Dispatcher is expected to develop information evaluation skills to determine nature of emergency from transmitted information; process pertinent incident information into the Office of Homeland Security/Public Safety Communications' (OHS/PSC) Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system; dispatch appropriate emergency resources within assigned area and class capabilities in response to citizen requests for public safety service, and tracks events to identified conclusion.

Duties include:

  • Dispatching Police Officers and Deputy Sheriffs units to respond to calls for assistance which are of a routine or emergency nature
  • Provide special instructions, hazard information, and additional information as appropriate or as requested by Police Officers or Deputy Sheriffs
  • Follow guidelines on how to enter information for broadcast to law enforcement officers throughout the County
  • Operate a work station comprised of multiple computer systems including Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency telephone system, geographical mapping tools (GIS and aerial photography), Computer Aided Dispatch, and other repositories for critical information to answer, triage and process incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for service
  • Initiate calls for service utilizing appropriate protocols, provides pre-arrival instructions including CPR instructions, when appropriate
  • Receive incoming requests for emergency and non-emergency assistance, determine the type of service(s) required and initiate calls for service in accordance with emergency dispatch protocols and PSC, Sheriff, Police, Fire/ EMS, other public safety agencies' policy
  • Receive calls via the radio, 9-1-1 system, or telephone while using an issued headset or other computer-based communication equipment and process/records pertinent information according to agency procedures and protocol and, performs job duties at the alternate 9-1-1 center if activated or during tests/drills
