  • Duties include conducting daily safety operations on moving freight cars from co-ops and terminals, switching cars out, building trains in the train yard, and filling out proper paperwork for cars that are picked up or set out. Talking with dispatchers and yard managers from foreign rail lines for proper instructions. Establishing clear radio communication with engineer and brakemen. Ensures that cargo and weight are distributed evenly along the train, and maintains communication with the train's engineer, traffic control personnel, and other crew members. Repair and maintain track and structure deviations in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Company specifications, as directed. Operate control panel switches from the railway yard tower to set traffic signals and to activate train switches that regulate railway traffic in railway yards.
  • Operate car retarders, turntables, and track switches to align locomotives and cars as required for coupling, uncoupling, or servicing.
  • Switch cars according to instructions, which indicate the location, disposition, and number of cars.
  • Lubricate moving parts of railway cars and locomotives. Operate machines and equipment such as sleeper sliders, anchors, rail lifters, drag drills, drag diggers, rail saws, and tie-bar cranes to lay, maintain, repair, and align railway tracks; to transfer, spread, level, and tamp ballast around ties and rails; and to clear snow from tracks.
  • Clean and make minor repairs to machines and equipment.
  • Patrol assigned track sections to identify and report damaged or broken track.
  • Perform other track maintenance duties as directed.
  • Visual inspections, replacing worn-out parts, greasing points, cleaning, repacking ballast, and other general upkeep.
  • Inspecting running rails for wear or cracks, using special tools to detect weak spots in rail joints, regularly checking under bridges for damage, and performing routine tests on equipment such as switches, signals, and crossings.
  • Corrective maintenance, repairing broken rails or ties, replacing damaged parts, realigning tracks, fixing drainage issues, removing vegetation from around tracks, repairing switches, or other faulty components.
  • Emergency repairs, replacing damaged rails or ties, to clearing debris off the tracks after a storm has passed through an area. When emergency issues, such as derailments, occur, call a reliable railroad track repair service.
  • Railroad flagging is necessary to ensure the safety of crews working on or near a railroad track. During construction, repair, or maintenance projects, you stand near the railroad and signal the train operators to slow down or stop.
