Pumper

Wyoming Refining Company, Par Pacific
10.2019 - 01.2022
  • As a pumper for Par Pacific, I got back to my roots. THis was an entry level position that gave me the opportunity to learn a new side of the oil & gas industry that I had previoudly been engaged with from a more production type of side, as opposed to the refining process. It was interesting and educational to learn some of the refining process while with WRC, as I managed the positioning of products all throughout the facility, and prepared each product for shipping, as well as monitored tank levels, pressures and waste water processes. This was a job that allowed me to earn a living to keep my family afloat until I was able to find a new job that would better engage my skills & talents more effectively.

Field Supervisor

Toc Oil (Transworld oil)
10.2018 - 03.2019

I was recruited to TOC, a small, start-up company, to be the production superintendent for a small field that they had bought out of bankruptcy filings. I supervised the entire field staff, including the pumping crew, comprised of 3 employees, up to 5 different roustabout crews, as well as 2 contract water haulers that ran 5 days/week, and crude haulers, as well as scheduled and supervised mechanics, technicians, and deliveries of any materials needed at our field, which was set upon a mountain top at 9500+ feet altitude on BLM & US Forest Service land. I was also the field rep who communicated and met often with, BLM & USFS inspectors for audit requests, field inspections and addressing written orders or non compliance incidents as well as acted as the onsite safety, environmental & IT rep as well. My duties included typing up & sending off daily & weekly reports to the Denver office, as well as scrutinizing & approving invoices daily, through the online ADP system, along with supervising day to day operations. During my short tenure there, I was able to schedule and execute several projects, including upgrading of multiple storage facilities on several well sites, upgrading natural gas compression units, upgrading SWD sites to more efficiently & consistently operate, began incorporating automation projects.

Production Foreman

M&K Oil Inc.
04.2018 - 10.2018

I was retained by M&K Oil Inc. when they acquired the Finn-Shirley field in Weston county, Wyoming, from Black Hills Corporation, based out of Rapid City, SD. As Production foreman for M&K, my direct reports increased from 7 to 20 pumpers/plant operators. I scheduled work for 18 pumpers, and our crude/water hauling department. I worked closely with M&K's new environmental/DOT department, to be sure that we were in compliance in every aspect. I also troubleshot issues on the 400+ electric wells in the M&K portfolio, as well as I had personally installed, programmed & trained staff with 3 D-Jax PennyPincher pump off controllers on M&K legacy wells. M&K's goal is to electrify their entire field of rod-lift pump units, and install PennyPinchers on each of them, which will greatly reduce their pulling costs, streamlining their operations & allowing them continued, profitable growth well into the future.

Production Foreman

Black Hills Exploration and Production
10.2014 - 03.2018

I applied for, and was awarded, the position of Production Foreman, from Production technician, in late 2014. Our field superintendent had recently been moved to a field in Johnson county Wyoming, to oversee a new field development there (Trabing field), and the production supervisor had just resigned, opening this position. It was a significant show of trust in BHEP to hire someone with no real prior management experience, to oversee 9 direct reports, as well as to be expected to perform significant Field Superintendent duties right away. I worked under roustabout/rig supervisor Ed Clingan briefly, before he retired just a few months into my tenure. My duties included supervising 9 direct reports (1 of whom was a contract pumper), scrutinizing and approving invoices daily, approving time, being the main communications with Denver offices, as well as corporate offices in Rapid City, SD as needed.

One of my first duties, was to approve & oversee the upgrading of our SWD/LACT metering facility to a remote operations system. This was a significant project, that went smoothly, and has increased efficiency and ease of SWD/LACT metering operations tremendously.

A project that was started prior to my promotion was the development of our own mobile pumping programming. This is an app based program, run from iPads (iPhone, in my case), which had any and every type of reporting incorporated in it, from daily pumping duties, to SPCC reporting and incident reports, valve/tank sealing, etc. This assisted in improving inefficiencies in reporting tremendously, and made us able to act on issues almost immediately.

Within the first 3 months in this position, I had to relieve an employee of his duties for drinking on the job. I worked closely with the corporate safety department (We had no onsite professional. Every kind of safety, and/or compliance department was several hours away.) and made a safe, uneventful termination. I note this experience as I take pride in having to do the hard task that was neglected for years prior to my taking this position, and having the insight and resolve to do the right thing, despite lacking experience and not having the full support of others around me, at the time.

After approximately one year on the job, my supervisor asked if I would take on extra responsibilities, in the form of supervising the new field in Johnson county, that we lovingly called, "Trabing field". I anxiously accepted and soon fell in love with a project that I was afraid may be overwhelming, initially. This is when I really met and began working closely with Ryan Lavergne, BHEP's new, ambitious engineer. Though the new field was a 2 hour drive from my home base, we made it work through uncompromising team work, communication and genuine thoughtfulness. I took on the responsibilities of scheduling vendors and contractors, and worked closely with the environmental compliance department, as well as government officials/agents, as this field was closely scrutinized due to it's new status, particularly regarding emissions control and reporting. I will always be thankful to my supervisor, Doran Newlin, for showing the faith and trust in me to offer me this opportunity, allowing me to thrive & flourish & realize my true potential.

At our Trabing field, I worked closely with environmental and operations engineering, to keep our flaring/venting within acceptable limits, as we had not developed collection lines to sell produced gas yet.

A very significant, and closely scrutinized aspect of the Trabing field was annual emissions testing. I worked closely with BHEP's environmental engineer, Nathan Groh, to successfully pass testing on our Trabing units. This was particularly challenging, as we had to coordinate with mechanics located out of Colorado, or even further away, to prep units for testing, and to be on site during testing, in case of any needed adjustments to bring units in compliance. The first testing was an event that was attended by several compliancy agencies around the state, as we were one of the first to perform this type of testing in the PRB, with so many jurisdictional parties involved. That was an exciting, anxious project, that ended with successful testing thanks to a great team effort.

Truly, the biggest challenge with supervising day to day operations in Trabing, was environmental compliance. I organized and scheduled any and all contaminated soil clean up projects, working closely with our environmental department and met BLM agent Lucas Keeler during my tenure at Trabing sites. I also was directly responsible for monitoring and regularly reporting on the netted pit at one of our Trabing sites.

Production Technician

Black Hills Exploration and Production
06.2006 - 10.2014

As BHEP Production technician, my duties were to learn to use dynamometer technology to analyze and diagnose down hole conditions in the 300+ BHEP wells, as well as collect fluid levels regularly. I also gained an understanding and familiarity with the electric systems in each of the 275+ electric wells, in order to maintain and troubleshoot as needed.

A large part of my job included supporting pumpers in their duties, including relief pumping as needed.

As a production technician, I was educated in the the functionality of the D-Jax PennyPincher POC, and personally installed 99% of the PennyPinchers that are currently in the field and still in use today, creating a minimal amount of rod and tubing wear and tear, as well as a minimal amount of energy usage, with optimum production. I formed a close relationship with the local electric cooperative linemen there during this time, which helped tremendously in my understanding, and ability to reach them and get assistance quickly, as needed.

As part of these duties included relief pumping as well as relief duties of production supervisor, I became quite familiar with valve and tank sealing responsibilities on a daily basis.

I learned about and became quite involved with the use of orifice plates, gas meters, witnessing meter calibrations & tank gauge sales for temp., gravity & BS&W determination and vet volume determination. I also became quite adept at measuring and calculating daily crude production levels on each BHEP well, and learned to tell is a well may have some pressure issues or perhaps prime mover issues, simply by calculating daily production numbers. Usually, the D-Jax PennyPincher would also give you this info, based upon it's daily run time, and production numbers.

As a technician/relief pumper/relief production supervisor, I also became involved with and assisted in being a leading voice within BHEP, for SPCC reporting and plans, including secondary containment calculations for volume and holding capacity.

I began to get involved with some drilling projects in our Trabing field as a tech, as well. My duties included traveling to the Trabing field to collect downhole data regularly, including when there was drilling rigs on site, drilling next door to where I was collecting data.

I was also dispatched to BHEP's field in Big Springs, Nebraska on a regular basis, to collect downhole information on wells there.

Workover Rig Operator

Black Hills Exploration and Production
02.2000 - 05.2006

I hired on with BHEP as a workover rig hand. I worked & learned each position on the BHEP rig- derrick hand, floor hand & operator. The main job we focused on was the "Huff & Puff" program, to re-stimulate mature wells, which included pulling rods & tubing, then running back in the hole with a larger string of tubing, 3.5", if I remember correctly, tested the casing, and pressured up against the perfs to open the perfs back up. Aside from this, we did typical rig work, with the bulk of that being pump changes and finding & replacing split tubing. There was also some cementing & driling out casing repairs, as well as some well plugging. This was a great way to learn and understand the downhole working of the BHEP wells.
