Work History

Optical Engineer II, Optical Test and Integration

RTX (RAYTHEON)
McKinney, Texas
08.2023 - Current
  • Optics lead for multiple research and development programs (customer, and internally funded). Responsibilities include coordinating the design, integration, and testing of optical system prototypes across multi-disciplinary teams and presenting the results to DoD customers.
  • Led the build, alignment, and calibration of novel optical test stations developed for the integration of EO/IR systems.
  • Designed, specified, and guided manufacture of custom aspheric lenses used in novel infrared test stations.

Optical Engineer, Optical Design and Analysis

RTX (RAYTHEON)
McKinney, Texas
08.2023 - 10.2024
  • Performed optical system analysis in both CODEV and ZEMAX by using custom macros to achieve high fidelity evaluation.
  • Designed complex optical systems utilizing sequential (CODEV and ZEMAX) and non-sequential (ZEMAX) ray-tracing software.
  • Led the design of visible and infrared optical test systems from early concepts through ray-tracing and CAD verification models. Drafted calibration and test procedures to supplement completed test stations.
  • Performed test and evaluation of optical materials via specialized bench setups in a lab setting. Experienced with radiometric, interferometric (wavefront), and image quality (MTF) measurements.

Optical / Laser Engineering Intern

RAYTHEON INTELLIGENCE & SPACE
McKinney, Texas
05.2022 - 08.2022
  • Ported complex multi-fold infrared and imaging systems from CODEV to ZEMAX and created documentation to hasten this process in the future. Models were successfully used by mechanical engineers to design and implement stray light baffling as well as make improvements to the mechanical housing.
  • Supported the High Energy Laser build team with beam alignment/analysis, fiber laser testing/integration, and optomechanical assembly in a cleanroom environment. Skills include CODEV and ZEMAX proficiency (sequential and non-sequential), optical alignment, fiber laser operation and troubleshooting, opto-mechanical assembly, optical component inspection and handling, ISO 8/7 cleanroom protocols.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

SUN CONTROL
Tucson, AZ
05.2021 - 08.2021
  • Drafted technical documentation to support internal processes, ensuring adherence with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other company guidelines.
  • Created mechanical designs to support the prototyping and development of new products.
  • Conducted quality control and process audits to identify gaps and drive efficiency improvements saving 10% in a key materials spending category.

Engineering Intern

HORIZON MACHINE
Tempe, Arizona
05.2019 - 08.2020
  • Worked closely with machinists to support the design and prototyping of products and product manufacturing fixtures by creating CAD models that aligned with technical specifications.
  • Performed inventory counts to ensure accountability; ordered critical supplies as needed.
  • Prepared and processed documentation for product families that aligned with SOPs and inspection requirements.

Notable Projects

  • SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT, 08/22, 05/23, Mirror Distortion Measurement System (Caterpillar Corporation) – Awarded “Best physical implementation of an analytically driven design”. Played a key role as both the optical and integration lead of a senior capstone project sponsored by Caterpillar which aimed to quantify distortion levels of mirrors used on various heavy equipment. The mirrors to be tested included both large aperture spherical convex and flat mirrors of varying sizes. The system utilized a deflectometry-similar design to analyze contours reflected from the mirrored surface. Contribution to the project included assistance with optical models (ray geometry / camera considerations) full mechanical design/modeling/analysis (including finite element analysis to determine beam deflection / modal effects), component fabrication (CNC routing, aluminum welding, CNC milling), and full system integration.
  • UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH PROJECT, 01/23, 05/23, Tensegrity Telescope Design. Served as optical engineering consultant for an undergraduate team comprised of mechanical engineers working to design build a tensegrity-like structure to house a telescope within a cubesat. Project sponsored by Professor Larry Head. Performed research on Near Earth Object Surveyor telescope designs to adapt to the project. Consulted with astronomers as well as optics professors on necessary specifications and lens design process. Completed an optimized field corrected Cassegrain-like design using Zemax. The design was made to meet budget and manufacturability requirements.
