• Ensure compliance to all FRA railroad regulations for safety/operation;
read, understand, apply book of rules, timetables, bulletins, train orders,
waybills, placards, safety instructions
• OSHA/Hazmat training
• Ensure safety of engine/rail cars, rail, yard; watch surroundings for
suspicious activity
• Inspect equipment on rail cars/engines; assist/instruct crews in
coupling/uncoupling, replace couplings, air brake hoses, air/electrical connections between locomotives; minor repairs; check track switch condition/direction
• Receive, relays and apply oral, written, radio instructions from dispatcher, yardmaster, or Trainmaster indicating switch movement, placement, or delivery of railroad cars/engines
• Conduct and signal the safe movement of rail cars and engines using lantern, hand, flag signals, or radio protocol to indicate when to start, stop, reverse and set/release air brakes.
