Marine science student at the University of Maine, Orono, concentrating my studies towards aquaculture. I have both field and lab-setting experience within the aquaculture industry. I enjoy teaching others about aquaculture and find it helps reinforce my understanding of the topic.
Over the last two school years at the University of Maine, Orono, I've helped out in the aquatic animal health lab under associate aquaculture professor Timothy Bowden. I've helped PhD student, Kyle Brennan, with his work on probiotics and phages in scallop hatcheries. I also developed my marine science capstone project where I took scallop hatchery samples and isolated bacteria from the genus pseudomonas through bacterial culturing, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.
During the last two fall semesters at the University of Maine, Orono, I've worked as a student grader/teaching assistant for the Introduction to Aquaculture course. I assist the professor in facilitating active-learning class assignments and answer student questions on aquaculture content. I also help out with grading of assignments, ensuring the students receive feedback in a timely manner.
During the last two summers, I worked at Norumbega Oyster Inc., one of the largest oyster farms in Maine. Throughout my time at the farm, I helped support the cultivation of oysters from juvenile to market size. My daily tasks on the farm ranged from packing oysters about to be sold, stocking oysters in grow-out cages, flipping and monitoring leases, and sorting oysters based on size and health.
