My primary responsibilities as a Microbiology Technician are to operate and maintain the laboratory's Polymerase Chain Reaction instruments including the Verigene, Cepheid, Alethia, BD Ma, Panther Fusion, Biofire and Vitek.
I regularly perform quality control and maintenance procedures on al of the previously listed instruments while also helping to troubleshoot issues as needed and working with field service engineers when necessary.
I also oversee receiving, inventory, and logging of supply shipments, ensuring everything is documented, categorized, and properly stored.
I have also assisted with a a large number of validations, including Yeast identification methods on Vitek, validating and training others to run Biofire Pneumonia Panels, and preparing and training other technicians to run new test kits on Cepheid.
Additionally, I have been trusted to assist in or lead the training of every new Microbiology Technician since starting as one myself in Spring of 2021.
Clinical Laboratory Assistant
Community Regional Medical Center
09.2020 - 04.2021
My primary responsibility as a lab assistant was to log samples into our computer system and ensure the correct samples were submitted for the desired test.
A large part of specimen processing is acting as a liaison between the medical and clinical staff, clarifying orders with nurses as needed and answering their questions as needed.
As a lab assistant I learned how to accession orders, allowing me to add on tests to samples or clean up orders when asked to do so, or to prevent duplicate tests from being ordered to prevent extra financial costs befalling patients.
I learned that prioritization was key while in this position, as certain tests are much more time sensitive than others, and some tests require additional preparatory steps.
Special Projects Manager
James Shields Research Library
07.2020 - 09.2020
In this role, I oversaw a large project intended to discard roughly 10,000 old volumes and integrate close to 20,000 more to replace them.
I determined where the new material needed to be placed by taking measurements of the volumes to discarded, what space was already available and obtaining estimates of much space was needed to neatly incorporate the incoming material.
I utilized Excel spreadsheets to track my progress as well as gauge how much work could be done each day and how long the project would take to complete.
I was offered this managerial position prior to the pandemic and was supposed to oversee a group of undergraduate students and direct them for the project's duration, but because of the shutdowns I was unable to have any students and had to work on my own.
