Hello! My name is Constance Venable. I am an experienced Special Education and ESL Teacher specializing in working with families as well as children. I am focused on providing an innovative and inspiring learning experience! I assisted in implementing the Even Start program in Carrollton ISD, where I worked to achieve family literacy by working with children and families together. I believe that even in a classroom setting, whenever possible, constant communication with the families and caregivers is so important. Parent Educator

At Even Start, my role was “Parent Educator”. I made weekly home visits to each family enrolled in the program. I would also conduct Parent Education classes in a classroom setting once a week with the parents as well. At the home visit, I would:

  • Model basic pre-k learning literacy exercises, then have parents model the exercise with them as well. Utilized many sensory companions, tactile items, songs, etc. to assist with retention.
  • Designed assessments to measure student progress and helped to determine students' needs. Noticed a 65% increase in comprehension and retention by the end of the program.
  • Weekly, I would conduct a Parent Education class with only the parents. Topics included: -The importance of Family Engagement -Parenting Styles -Types of Behaviors -Setting Limits -Mental Health
  • Creativity is key! I often use creativity when planning lessons. Coming up with creative ways to explain complex topics or teach students through different methods.
  • Used a variety of teaching methods, including visual aids and technology to help students understand the material better. I believed in conversation and practice. It’s important to be able to adapt the style to meet the needs of the student.

As a Special Education teacher, I provided case management in the form of an Individual Education Plan tailored to each student's differing needs and goals. This was done by a referral and initial evaluation. Using the information gathered:

  • Designed the IEP. This was followed by implementation reviews and subsequent ARD meetings.
  • Established efficient classroom management procedures.
  • Frequently communicated with those closest to student at home. This is paramount in helping assess their needs on all levels.
  • Developed Individualized Education plans for each student based on SMART Goals. - Strategic-Measurable-Attainable -Relevant -Time-bound.
  • Organized sessions including parents as well as other teachers to determine areas we all felt needed improvement. Leading to 25% improvement within three months.
  • Continued increased parent interactions throughout the year resulting in a 40% increase in assessment scores by end of year.
  • Recommended accommodations and/or adaptive technology. I constantly check the latest community resources for technology that may be beneficial to my students and their families.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers and speech pathologists to provide differentiated instruction and classroom accommodations/modifications.
  • Provided a multi-sensory language-based classroom including visual auditory tactile and kinesthetic support.
