Self-employeed

Spanish Tutor
09.2019 - 02.2020

Job overview

  • Encouraged student participation by providing positive reinforcement during lessons.
  • Assisted the student with conjugating verbs, explaining sentence structures, and demonstrating typical conversations in Spanish.
  • Led discussions on various topics related to Latin American culture and history, as part of the curriculum for teaching Spanish.
  • I created Adapted lesson plans according to individual student needs so she could reach her full potential while studying Spanish in a way that wouldn't be overwhelming by creating a sense of confidence and accountability.
  • I experienced the structure in which Spanish is introduced and taught in the different grade levels. I started the Intro to Spanish classes in the 8th grade offered at my middle school; I was born in a Spanish-speaking country( EL SALVADOR). I learned to read and write, and I went to a private semi-prestige school whose mission to educate was well-known and held relevant. They managed to teach a troublemaker, a much younger, hyperactive me, how to read and write; they claimed I was trouble from the start and that they would have to enroll me in special classes aiming to build on kids' morality and proper social conduct. The school proved to be too expensive, and I had to relocate to my grandma's care in the countryside; the school I attended was one of the super low resources and low-income small towns people/villagers. Despite of the cultural shock, I got to experience two different worlds that shaped my learning for the better, for it made me a more comprehensive learner/ student. Later on, I relocated to the U.S.A and was registered to the Northport East Northport school district in 2011, which allowed me to develop as a student and as an individual. I learned to adapt to a new world once again. This time it was stranger than before, new language, new lifestyle, new ways of learning, new people. Eventually, I thrived thanks to the devoted ESL staff/teachers who aided me and saw me test out of the program and vessel through the years in the different grade levels as a student-athlete. This life experience helped me build the confidence to be able to teach/instruct classmates based on their learning styles, which I was able to detect based on how they expressed themselves. As for the torturing portion, I had one student who had all the skills and proper education at the highest levels but lacked confidence in a strange setting where there was a language barrier; I remember how uncomfortable I felt in an English-speaking classroom and nation. So, I was prepared to help deliver constructive knowledge and criticism on the school material we reviewed and studied. The on-the-phone and sometimes FaceTime calls were organized to address concerns on material that was confusing, but my main concern was on what the student had accepted as true or believed was right/correct and why. We had discussions, and I would explain why things were wrong and or right, and we developed methods of identifying mistakes and solutions and ways to work around a mental block and pre-conceived notions, which is where the learning occurred. The student had mentioned she would get 70s and 80s but wasn't confident and felt unprepared; we worked at it and expressed gratitude when her test results scored where 90s and 100s without fail. As an independent first-time instructor/ tutor, I felt as if I had found a level of self-confidence, gratitude, and mastery from that moment on, and I wondered what I could do to maximize my level of helping others. Education sounded right, but I was more intrigued by military service; I eventually settled on becoming a police officer.
  • Addressed specific student needs through parent and teacher coordination, input, expressed concerns etc..
  • Researched new materials and methodologies that could be used when teaching Spanish classes more effectively or efficiently than current approaches being used at my school or district level organizationally speaking .
  • Developed and implemented age-appropriate, culturally relevant activities to engage students in learning Spanish.

Brett's Bicycle Recycle
Huntington Station, NY

Bike Mechanic ASSISTANT
03.2019 - 07.2019

Job overview

  • Lisa Karrer and her wife, Deborah Porretto, launched the nonprofit in early 2017 after Karrer's brother, Brett Rainey, died in a motorcycle crash in South Huntington on May 15, 2015. The duo started the organization to give back to the community that was there for them in their deepest time of grief. Karrer and Portetto, with heavy hearts, have opted to discontinue their organization in 2021. Community members would donate new or used bikes in any condition, including parts, and the duo would fix and house them and donate to children and adults who reached out with interest in acquiring a bike because they couldn't afford one or because they knew of someone else who needed a bike. Back in 2018 or 2019, I heard of the organization and how and why it came to be from a reference from a middle school teacher. I was going through a lot of financial hardships and had found out that with the bicycle riding skills I had acquired over the years that I could pick up mountain biking; I used low-level cheap entry bikes that would brake down often and get me into a spiral of overpaying for parts from time to time, too short for comfort. I reached out to BARRETS for the possible donation of a bike that could handle the trails better; out of all the options, my eyes were set on a green specialized hard-tail XC bike that needed minimal maintenance and repairs. I got the opportunity to work on other bikes in hopes of giving back to the community and BARRETS for their generosity. I also continued to make donations over time, which consisted of the bikes that I had grown out of or didn't need anymore.
It was awesome to feel and be a part of such a generous mission, even if it was for a short period of time.
