Social Emotional Learning Chair

Ingenuity Prep Public Charter School
Washington
08.2022 - 06.2024
  • Provided organizational leadership and collaborated with executive partners to establish long-term goals, strategies and company policies.
  • Established performance metrics to monitor progress towards organizational goals.
  • One example of a system I have evolved and created to support others in my school is the social-emotional learning (SEL) initiative I led as the Social Emotional Chair Leader at my Early Education Academy. In this role, I was tasked with leading professional development trainings, brainstorming solutions to improve behavior support systems such as simply placing a QR code in the calming space to help teachers record in the moment data regarding challenging behaviors, and implementing new strategies around character education for our academy like weekly character value focus assemblies lead by teachers who were already implementing great things in their classroom to share with the teacher community and to teach students about the character value that we would focus on for the week. To ensure the success of this initiative, I took several actions to support staff, foster collaboration, and address challenges related to student behavior and social-emotional growth.

The first step I took was creating and implementing a three-week professional development series, which was held during three of our weekly PD times. These sessions focused on reinforcing our SEL teachings and providing teachers with specific strategies to use in the classroom. Additionally, I shared weekly newsletter email blasts to ensure that staff remained grounded in the strategies we were implementing, and kept them aligned with our overall goals.

To further support our teachers, I regularly monitored data input in our tracking system to identify classrooms with high or specific needs. This data allowed me to meet with school leaders bi-weekly to create actionable plans for addressing challenging behaviors and providing targeted interventions. Additionally, I worked closely with culture specialists and behavior support personnel to review the SEL curriculum and ensure it was effectively being delivered to small groups and specific classrooms in need of additional support.

One significant contribution I made was co-creating a simplified rubric that helped teachers identify key indicators for student behaviors across six domains: expressing and managing feelings, managing behavior, independence, and self-help skills, recognizing and responding to others’ feelings, engaging with peers, and resolving conflict. This tool allowed teachers to better understand what behaviors to look for at different developmental levels and how to assess and address them effectively.

Through this process, I learned the importance of listening intently to the needs expressed by others. I learned how to ask reflective questions to clarify thoughts, foster understanding, and help others see their role in solving problems or contributing to solutions. I also developed my skills in data collection and analysis, which helped me identify the most significant needs in the school and use that information to inform and adjust strategies. This experience taught me how crucial it is to be adaptive and reflective in leadership, especially when it comes to addressing complex needs in a school setting. Ultimately, I learned that creating a system of ongoing support, feedback, and collaboration can lead to more sustainable growth and success for both staff and students.
