• Collect a variety of blood samples through venipuncture or capillary puncture using syringes, butterfly needles and straight needles.
• Collect blood samples from approximately 40 individuals of all ages per day, maintaining consistent patient flow.

• Label blood vials with critical information such as time of collection, date and patient name. Double-checking information for accuracy.

• Assisting laboratory technologists by re-racking and storing day-old specimens to organize and create more room in refrigerators.
• Loading specimens on analyzers, centrifuges, and blood culture incubators.
• Perform blood draws based on priority such as stat, schedule, and routine orders.
• Retime, cancel, and update lab orders and specimens based on duplication and protocol.
• Respond to trauma alerts, rapid responses, and codes.
• Communicate with nursing staff and other laboratory personnel about lab orders and the condition/whereabouts of certain patients.
• Stock inventory when supplies run out in the lab and Emergency Department.
• Create requisition forms for specimens from outpatient facilities.
• Adhere to HIPAA guidelines regarding patient privacy.
• Assist in the training of new phlebotomists.
• Dress in appropriate personal protective equipment based on patient isolation to maintain infection control.
• Dispose of used needles in sharps containers to avoid accidental needlesticks.
• Sanitize benches and work area to prevent contamination and spread of disease.

Nursing Assistant

• Perform hands-on nursing care under direct RN supervision, adhering to medical center policies and procedures.
• Provide basic patient care by bathing and grooming patients, changing bedding and assisting in feeding activities.
• Work with approximately 7 patients per shift depending on staffing and unit census.
• Answer call lights to assist patient needs.
• Assist nurses on dressing changes, catheter insertion/removal, starting/removing IVs, unhooking NG tubes.
• Collect and document vital signs to track current patient conditions. Checked blood pressures both manually and automatically by proper equipment.
• Assist nurses in checking blood glucose approximately twice per shift using a point of care device.
• Monitor oxygen levels and provide nasal cannulas when needed.
• Apply and monitor telemetry to monitor patient heart rates and oxygen levels.
• Protect patient, self and others from injury during transfers, lifts and transports by using proper equipment and body mechanics.
• Implement fall prevention techniques as specified in plan of care.
• Perform one-on-one sitting with patients in need of extra supervision due to suicidal and safety precautions.
• Transportation of patients upon discharge, to the operating room, and to radiology.
• Answer phones and calls via Vocera from nurses and other nursing assistants.
• Demonstrate respect and regard for dignity of patients, families and fellow employees to promote professional, responsible and courteous environment.
• Look for physical, emotional, and symptomatic changes in patient condition and obtain necessary care for medical concerns.
• Document patient input and output as well as activity and distances walked.
• Collect urine and stool specimens and packaged for laboratory transport to complete diagnostic tests.
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment based on isolation orders to maintain infection control.
• Complete daily room cleaning and organizing to provide patients with a clean environment.
• Perform light cleaning duties by emptying wastebaskets and dirty linen hampers, and sanitizing surfaces.
