Summary

I have worked as a Building Manager at the UH Hilo Student Life Center and as an Intramural Manager for the UH Hilo Intramural program while being a student at the UH Hilo. After finishing college, I transitioned into the process of becoming a Police Officer for the Hawaii County Police Department. At the start of my career, I endured 10-months of intensive training; which included 6-months of controlled environment scenarios and classroom studying, and 4-months of field training. I was then appointed the privilege of being a patrol man and served in the district of Kona for 10-months. I then transferred to serve in the district of Puna, which is has been my assignment for the past 21-months.

Duties Summary

Under general supervision, performs police work of moderate difficulty and complexity in law enforcement, crime prevention, investigations, or in other specialized areas; may perform plain clothes assignments; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

Patrol:

  • Operates a police car, motorcycle, or other authorized police vehicles to patrol an assigned beat; to patrol streets, park and beach areas, schools, drive-ins, and other places where juveniles frequent and congregate; and to patrol areas having high vehicle accident rates.
  • Watches for and prevents unauthorized activity.
  • Responds to complaints and requests for assistance.
  • Assists officers in adjoining beats as necessary.
  • Investigates fires and industrial accidents; gives first aid as required.
  • Cites traffic violators in moving vehicles and under hazardous conditions.
  • Takes fingerprints as required.
  • Investigates routine misdemeanor and felony offenses by and against juveniles, involving such matters as runaways, curfew violations, glue and paint sniffing, shoplifting, child molestation and abuse, indecent exposure, and missing persons.
  • Gathers evidence, examines and evaluates facts, and determines the classification of the alleged offense/violation.
  • Makes arrests and bookings, preserves evidence, and prepares reports.
  • Testifies in court.
  • Counsels juvenile offenders and parents; makes referrals to social agencies as appropriate.
  • Gives talks and participates in panel discussions on juvenile delinquency problems.
  • Primarily investigates cases involving the theft of illegally converted automobiles.
  • Investigates miscellaneous cases in which automobiles are involved, such as abandoned vehicles and trespassing vehicles.
  • May occasionally investigate other criminal misdemeanor cases.
  • Interrogates and interviews suspects, complainants, and witnesses involved.
  • Makes intensive follow-up investigations of traffic accident cases including felony cases involving fatalities.
  • Takes measurements and photographs scene, places charges, and prepares detailed reports with scaled diagrams.
  • Advises and assists patrol personnel in proper accident investigation techniques.
  • Serves warrants and subpoenas when assigned.
  • Locates persons involved by interviewing friends, relatives, neighbors, and associates, and by utilizing various other sources.

Special Assignments:

  • Maintains surveillance of subversive and radical elements in the community.
  • Attends demonstrations, rallies, and meetings and observes, records, and reports on happenings.
  • Participates in stake-out, riot, and mob control.
  • Operates a police car to patrol high crime areas and to watch for unauthorized activity.
  • Makes on view arrests and assists patrol personnel as required.
  • Provides security for visiting dignitaries and officials and ensures their safety.
  • Prepares reports of activities.
  • Familiarizes self with general and special orders, administrative notices, police bulletins, and other related materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
