While working for this after-school program, I truly got to know each and every kid on a personal level.

The group was about 60 to 70 kids, depending on the day. Our sole purpose as after-school leaders was to make the children feel safe, seen, and valued. Being that it was an after-school program, the children had more opportunity to branch out from just "focusing on their education."

Our job as their leader was not only to make sure they excel in the classroom, but also to help them truly be themselves. Within the first 30 minutes to an hour, I would help the children with their homework, no matter what the subject. After that given time was over, everyone had the chance to find what interested them. Whether that be card games, cosmetology, slime making, obstacle courses, going to the gym for either dance or basketball, etc. We were teaching in a predominantly African American neighborhood. My team and I wanted the children to know your situation does not limit where your dreams can take you. We emphasized that there are different paths to success, and did our best to introduce the wonderful possibilities.
