Data Management Specialist

NOAA Fisheries
06.2024 - 04.2025
  • Serve as an inseason advisor for the North Pacific Observer Program by providing consultation, direction and advice to the North Pacific fisheries observers in the effective monitoring and use of fishery survey gear use of commercial fisheries, protected species, fisheries research data, seabirds and marine mammal encounters.
  • Assess, track, and ensure that data collected by North Pacific fisheries observers are consistent with the North Pacific Fishery program’s established procedures and data quality standards, enabling data-driven insights on effective management of sustainable fishery
  • I maintain all of the observer sampling equipment, which includes repair, cleaning, and prepping (greasing and oiling of mechanical scales). Mending baskets with zip ties, battery replacement for digital cameras, salvaging parts from broken equipment to make other equipment usable. I have prepared SOPs (standard operating procedure documents) for the maintenance and repair of equipment in the office and in the field.
  • I have managed several calendars- the observer check-in calendar which is in the Observer Check-in Database, the gear check out calendar, which is a google sheet to track and schedule gear check-outs with observers and their stakeholder providers, and also the calendar used to schedule fisheries observers a\d provider staff to gain access to campus. I routinely contact observers and providers staff to schedule and reschedule appointments.
  • I represent the gear room during weekly FMA staff meetings, updating the program on the gear room activities and answering any gear related questions. I regularly interact with stakeholders to answer gear questions, provide expert equipment advice, and persuade observers to do a better job.
  • While serving as an Inseason advisor, also reviewing, gathering, analyzing and interpreting scientific and technical information that observers document in the field. This data is used to determine environmental impacts on Alaskan Fisheries and what quota can be allocated.
  • Assisting the North Pacific Observer Program training team preparing observers for sea data collection and deployment with proper use, operating and handling of sampling and safety gear in the North Pacific Gear Room. Observers collect their sampling and safety gear and that gear information is updated in the the Observer Gear Inventory System Database.
  • I routinely advised AFSC staff, observer providers, stakeholders and observers deploying to sea on the equipment they needed to bring to the North Pacific to do their job. This included safety equipment like life jackets and immersion suit, down to the number of pencils and clipboards they needed to take to Alaska to do their jobs.
  • I have worked several times a year with the other divisions within the Alaska Fisheries Science Center and the Northwest Fisheries Science center to provide access to survey gear, and safety gear. I advise them on equipment to take (i.e survey safety gear).
  • I am an expert in using the observer gear inventory system database to organize and track observer gear and equipment. I have used the database for the past 5 years in my position, I also have extensive experience with EXCEL spreadsheets and google sheets, having used them to track observer deployments and gear.
  • I have assembled over 1,600 sets of observer gear that have been deployed to the North Pacific Groundfish Observer Program which is used to collect fishery dependant data. I average 400 gear sets per year.
  • Daily planned and unplanned maintenance, repair and fabrication of new and returned gear in the North Pacific Observer Program Gear Room. This includes cleaning gear that is dirty and retiring gear that is outdated.
  • Successfully worked with the North Pacific Observer Program for 8 years observing and managing gear and equipment.
  • I routinely cleaned and organized the NPOP gear room. I repaired all the observer data collection tools. I reorganized the gear facility to make the gear processes more efficient. Communicated regularly with supervisors to improve the gear room facilities, especially during the covid 19 protocols where entry to the facility was limited and contactless sample equipment had to be issued.
  • I've prepared several SOPs for the North Pacific Observer Program Gear team. These include Observer Gear Inventory System (OGIS) quick reference sheets. I have also prepared documents used by the program for scale maintenance and gear cleaning instructions for observers/scientists in the field.
