Work History
Gardener's Assistant
University of Northern Colorado
05.2018 - 05.2020
I was employed seasonally while attending the University of Northern Colorado to assist Zone Gardeners during the Summers.
I was trained to operate machines such as belly mowers, walk mowers, string trimmers, and backpack blowers in addition to learning irrigation head repair and assisting with trash/litter removal.
I used the knowledge I gained from working with a Zone Gardener to apply for a University Aide position.
University Aide
University of Northern Colorado
05.2020 - 11.2020
My duties as a University Aide included fertilizing grass, mowing grass, string trimming, backpack blowing, trash and litter removal, snow removal, weed removal, pruning trees and bushes, and repairing irrigation.
I was called upon to do a number of things that were not limited to turf care, plant care, or trash removal such as team lifting and moving heavy objects.
I was trained to run more advanced equipment in this position than I ran as a student seasonal employee, such as 72" deck mowers, zero turn radius mowers, skid steer bucket loaders, a wood chipper, Ventrac tractor, and large Kubota and John Deere tractors.
I was responsible for other types of irrigation repairs as a University Aide than as a student seasonal employee, particularly valve-in-heads, mainlines, laterals, ball valves, and sprinkler zone valves.
During the Winters, I would assist with snow removal by hand shoveling stairs, building entrances, and around bollards. I would also apply ice melt as needed.
Grounds/ Nursery I
University Of Northern Colorado
11.2020 - 07.2023
Working as a Zone Gardener at UNC, I maintained 9 holes of the 14 hole disc golf course Ursa Major, and I fell in love with the sport as I continued to maintain the grounds. I became the employee my supervisor would come to for questions about the grounds and changes to the grounds within the disc golf course.
My duties as a Zone Gardener were similar to what they were as a University Aide, but also I was responsible for between 1 and 3 student employees and/or and University Aides throughout the year. I trained them to mow the grass with riding and push mowers, run weed eaters, prune bushes and trees, drive manual transmission vehicles, and give pointers on how they could improve in each area of what we did.
I was trained to operate forklifts on the university campus.
As a Zone Gardener, I became a certified member of the ALCC (Associated Landscaping Contractors of Colorado).
About half of the area I was responsible for was zoned out with valve-in-head irrigation, so I became comfortable with repairing valve-in-head sprinklers.
I was responsible for operating equipment for snow removal on the sidewalks, service drives, smaller roads, and building entrances. I used a Toro groundsmaster with a broom or blade for this.
