Community Portable X-Ray (Houston)

Medical X-Ray Tech (Portable X-Rays)
05.2012 - 05.2014

Job overview

  • I worked as an X-Ray Technologist as a Medical Portable X-Ray company called Community Portable X-Ray. This company was an independent contractor who worked solely with retirement homes, hospices, and hospitals for the elderly. Our company provided the services of providing portable x-rays on there patients. As there employee it was my job to drive the company van to the retirement homes and hospitals to perform the medical x-rays that were required for each specific and uniquely different patient. Every patient was unique in the sense that they had varying body types ranging from very skinny 75lbs to extremely obese 500lb plus. And that required a lot of patience, understanding, compassion and most of all, sheer body strength. It was my job to load the van with the all the appropriate x-ray cassettes needed for the jobs I was tasked with at the time. I also had to load the Portable X-Ray tube in the van and fold it up and lock it into place. When I first started working for them we hadn't yet started using DR which is Direct Radiography. We were using the old primitive method of Radiography where once you had shot the x-rays on your cassettes you would then have to physically develop them in a dark room which we had at our office. This was very time consuming as you would have to come back to the office after you had driven to the facility that you shot the x-rays at, just to make sure you got all of there anatomy on the x-rays. Once you finished developing them You'd hang them up on a view box to check and see if you clipped any pertinent anatomy. And if you did clip some anatomy you would then have to go all the way back out to the facility which could be up to 2 hours away just to retake the x-rays. Now if you achieved a good x-ray you could then send it off to the radiologist so he could read it and give the patients their results. I was on the weekend shift which was an on call position that started on Saturday morning at 8 am and ended Monday morning at 8 am. We were provided with next tell radios which provided us with the name of the facility that needed the x-rays and the patients name, room number and the different types of x-rays that need to be performed. It wasn't abnormal for me to have to stay awake for Sometimes as long as 48 hours straight. Things got a lot better when our company decided to implement DR. That simply means you didn't have to physically drive back and fodth to the office just to process the film in a dark room to make sure you got everythingyou needed in the x-rays and then send them off to the radiologist to read them.. You'd just place the cassette behind the patient in the desired position for that specific x-ray and once you shot it, the image would be captured on the film inside the cassette. Once you did that you could just take the used cassettes back to the van in the parking lot and place the cassettes inside of this machine called a digitizer that was installed in the van and it would process the film without needing a dark room. It would then send an extremely high quality copy of the image to a proprietary computer screen that was also mounted in the van. After the image was received on the screen we could then check to see if we clipped any needed anatomy, and if we did we would just walk back in there and take more since we were still in the parking lot. There were a ton of responsibilities needed to do this job.
  • You had to be kind, and caring. You'd have to apply good bed side manners to the patients to keep them at ease.
  • You had to be gentle with the patients bc of their age they could get hurt quite easily.
  • You also had to be spot on with your controls as to not over radiate the patients or yourself. On the other hand you had to be careful not to underexpose the patients bc that would require you to have to administer more radiation when you retook the failed x-rays.
  • You also had to be very careful you got the right patient asking for their birthdays and full names to verify you had the correct patients.
  • You also had to be a hard worker bc you could be up for extremely long amounts of time being on call for 48 hours straight.
  • And you had to be strong bc sometimes you're required to lift patients upwards of 500 pounds or more.
  • And you had to be smart, calling on your memory from school.
  • Sanitized, restocked, and organized exam rooms and medical equipment.
  • Directed patients to exam rooms, fielded questions, and prepared for physician examinations.
  • Obtained client medical history, medication information,
  • symptoms, and allergies.
  • Performed medical records management, including filing, organizing and scanning documents.
  • Collected and documented patient medical information such as blood pressure and weight.
  • Completed clinical procedures and gathered patient data for interpretation by physician.
  • Collaborated with medical and administrative personnel to maintain patient-focused, engaging and compassionate environment.
  • Obtained and documented patient medical history, vital signs and current complaints at intake.
  • Answered telephone calls to offer office information, answer questions, and direct calls to staff.
  • Completed EKGs and other tests based on patient presentation in office.
  • Explained procedures to patients to reduce anxieties and increase patient cooperation.
  • Measured patient pulse oximetry.
  • Supported duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
  • Liaised with patients and addressed inquiries, appointment requests and billing questions.
  • Implemented care and efficiency improvements to support and enhance office operations.
  • Collected pertinent data and calculations to aid physician in interpreting results.
  • Measured patient spirometry. Followed appropriate procedures to minimize patient's exposure to radiation.
