As a 16-year-old Junior Counselor at Yacht Club sailing camp, I was responsible for supervising and assisting children aged 6-8 as they learned the fundamentals of sailing. Key Responsibilities:
- Taught basic sailing techniques, including steering, knot-tying, and wind awareness.
- Assisted instructors in rigging and launching small sailboats.
- Ensured camper safety by enforcing life jacket policies and monitoring changing weather conditions.
- Led group activities to keep campers engaged and comfortable with being on the water.
- Provided emotional support to children who were nervous or struggling with new skills.
- Helped organize daily schedules and assisted with meal/snack times.
Skills & Lessons Learned:
- Responsibility & Leadership: I learned how to take charge of a group of young campers, ensuring their well-being and helping them develop confidence on the water.
- Patience & Communication: Working with children required clear, simple instructions and a lot of encouragement to keep them engaged and motivated.
- Problem-Solving & Adaptability:Each day brought different challenges, from dealing with scared campers to adjusting plans due to weather changes.
- Teamwork:Collaborating with other counselors and instructors was essential for keeping the camp running smoothly and making sure every child received the attention they needed.
This experience strengthened my ability to lead, stay organized, and work under pressure all skills that will benefit me in future roles.
