Lived for 17 years in a remote yupik culture

Living in Kwethluk Alaska was a fantastic experience. The residents of Kwethluk were quick to accept me and were very kind and helpful in my new culture. I had the opportunity to do a variety of outdoor activities such as, Salmon fishing, ( drift netting and rod and reeling). I was taught to trap wolves, wolverines, Links, and had the opportunity  to ride my snowmobile hundreds of miles in the tundra. I traveled by boat to the coast and gathered a variety of waterfowl eggs and campec. I learned how to navigate my boat on the river and read the channels so that I could travel to the mountains, camp and catch Dolly Varied trout, Rainbow trout and Artic Grayling ,

My experiences in Alaska was very unique . I had the privilege of learning all of the outdoor skills mentioned above and made friends and learned their cultural ways. The cultural trait I admired most of the Yupik was their laid back personality and the art of listening. I look forward to the day that I return to Kwethluk Kwethluk.
