Although I do not have formal training in childhood development, I have been employed by my local school district as a Marching Band instructor for the past three years, and I have also participated in VBS (Vacation Bible School) for the past decade.
As a marching band instructor, my main focus is on guiding the band members to look their best. That requires, but is not limited to, uniform tidiness and the importance of it, time management and the importance of giving your all for your team, and allowing the students to come to me as a safe space while keeping respectful boundaries in place. Safety is my biggest concern for the band, and I will often direct the students, parents, and community members to follow safer practices when they are performing. Another task that I have is informing the parents and legal guardians of my students of band decisions and the procedures that need to take place for the band's goals to come into fruition. The marching band ranges in age from 13 years of age to 18 years old.
My involvement with VBS varies per year. I act every year in the play that happens daily during the week, and often walk around photographing the children who are in attendance using safe practices, making sure to not photograph the children whose parents do not wish to have their child photographed. When I am not doing any of what was previously mentioned, I will help entertain the children during the slower times of the day or while they are walking to their next activity. I often help in the games department, making sure to change the rules to accommodate the younger children, along with any who have learning disabilities or social anxiety, so that everyone can partake in the activities as they choose to. To me, as long as the child feels safe and smiles, then I succeeded in doing the base requirement of the job, often striving for them to break out of their shell and make lasting friendships with the other children.
In order to work with children in my state, I have all the requirements, certifications, and licensing needed to be an adult who works with children.
